slicone baking dishes?

I am looking to spend my gift card to Crate & Barrel and I was looking into the silicone muffin pans because the metal ones I already have are rusting. I have to use paper liners which I don't normally mind, but when baking muffins and not cup cakes I would rather not use paper liners.

Is silicone safe???? I just looked it up and one web site said it was, but was hoping someone has more knowledge on the subject!

Thanks!

I have a silicone baking sheet that goes ontop of a cookie pan. It's wonderful and everything comes out evenly cooked, even though the pan is burnt and in pretty bad shape. I'm not sure if it's terrible or not. I would think it is if the FDA approved, right? (hahaha)

Me, too. They look really fun and a great way to use my Michael's 40% coupon.

I *despise* my silicone muffin pans. Really. Hate them. I'm pretty sure I don't even have them anymore. Don't brown as well as dark metal, are a messy b!tch to clean, and are hard to free the muffins from, even after adequetely pre-oiling. Did I mention I didn't like them? But I'm sort of picky with cookware anyway...

I guess I don't understand why you're pre-oiling? We've got two different muffin trays that are silicone, and love both of them (ones for bigger muffins than the other). If you try to pre-oil them, though, the oil does turn sticky and will hinder getting the muffins out. They come out really easily without anything.

The *only* issue we have with them is that if you wait for the muffins to completely cool before getting them out, it can get difficult because apparently the silicone expands some when it's hot. When it cools down, the muffins aren't stuck but are really squeezed in there. We don't normally have that problem, though, since I like to eat whatever comes out of the oven as soon as it comes out of the oven

From what I've read online, it really sounds like this stuff is too new to know too much about. We so rarely bake, though, that I think the effects of stress from worrying about it would be more damaging to me.
