difficulty at the social security office

Did anyone else who had a homebirth in the U.S. have difficulty with getting a social security number? They gave me such a hassle because I didn't have a letter from ds's doctor, even though it plainly states in their paperwork that the letter can be from a midwife or doctor. I had a letter from my midwife. After about 45 minutes of waiting around and politely challenging what the woman was telling me, she talked with someone and decided to take my papers. I really hope a social security card actually arrives in the mail in 4 weeks. In my experience, no one in an official capacity seems to understand what to do when you tell them you had a homebirth. Our healthcare providers were cluless also.

I must say though, I breastfed quite a bit in the social security office and no one gave me disapproving looks.

I haven't attempted this yet. My midwife said that the social security office can be more difficult to work with. I'm waiting on picking up some paperwork from my midwife so that I can go do the birth certificate thing, and then it's on to the SS office. Yeah! :

I'm sorry you got such a hassle. We had an unassisted home birth in 2004(so I never even saw a midwife at all), and we had no problem getting the birth certificate or the social security card...wonder why when you did have a midwife they have to be such a pain!?! : Good luck. Sara

my midwife files everything for us, which is way cool. We got the birth certificate yesterday, so hopefully we'll get the ssn soon.
