Best Dyson for Various Floor Surfaces?

I've heard a lot of great things about the Dyson and they get good reviews on Amazon.com. But it's really hard trying to figure out the best one for our home. We have almost all carpet on the top floor, carpet, hardwood and tile on the second floor, and 50/50 carpet and tile in the basement.

Any insight?

We have the regular yellow Dyson which we use on all of our floor surfaces: old parquet, wool and jute rugs (with and without nap) and glass mosaic tile. We've had no issues with any of those surfaces.

We also got that one because it was the least expensive and we could add the additional tools later on (DH loves the pet hair attachement) when our budget would allow.

It's def. a great machine, it picks up more fur/dust than I even realized we had!

i still have not made a decision about vaccum's either... im horrible on them... i use it daily...
how does they dyson BELT hold up? does the suction up part clogg with lots of dust/dirt yet??
how easy is the dirt cup to change??

i dont know... it just seems like ALOT of $$ to spend however if i dont have to keep replacing appliances yearly it could be worth the cost....

i wish there was a way to take them for a 'test drive'
ya know test on cheerios, dirt, dust, bits of paper... etc and see how they perform

I've had mine for a year, it really doesn't clog up or lose suction, and the canister is VERY easy to empty. I was lucky and found mine on clearance - I got the DC-07 just as the DC14 models were out. I dunno about cheerios, but we have a long-haired dog and 3 cats. It sucks up hair, litter spillage, dirt, everything.

1growingsprout As far as I know, there is no belt on a Dyson. Also, the whole design of the machine is to make sure it doesn't lose suction. From my experience that claim is true. (If you click on the link I posted they outline key points of the construction.)

You don't change the dirt canister, you just unlatch it, walk to the trashcan, pull the release and the bottom of the canister opens into the can. Relatch the bottom and resecure it to vacuum body. Your hands never have to touch the dirt.

We've had ours for a couple of years and use it 2-4 times a week (on MASSIVE amounts of pet hair) and it's holding up just fine. I suck up socks, cat toys, hair thingies, shoelaces, jewelry etc. on a regular basis and it hasn't seemed to have an ill effect on the working parts.

Well DH purchased a Dyson tonight - the Animal. So far so good. It was really nice to see how clean our carpet was with just ONE pass! It did just fine on the tile and the hard woods too - no kicking dust and dirt behind! I was really happy with that. With my canister vac I had to change the heads each time I switched between flooring!

I got the basic yellow one a couple of weeks ago. I Love it. I know I should reserve love for non-plastic appliances but this thing is worth it. My 4 year old just sucked up half of our christmas tree needles on the floor and it keeps on going. That would have easily clogged my old vac.

We are using it on 4 different carpet naps and I've taken to turning the setting to bare floor and doing the kitchen floor. It works great.

Also, today was probably the 8th time I've vac'd and I finally had a reasonable amount of dirt in it. It was disgusting. We have a large dog and a cat, 2 boys and live in an old farmhouse. We regularly cleaned our floors. I am embarassed about what came out of my floor. Brought nap back to old area rugs. And the house smells cleaner. I didn't even know it had a not so fresh scent until this vac.

This thing is amazing for the suction. I have pulled apart all the pieces to see how it would do with a clog, so easy. No screwdrivers or hidden corners.

Emptying is easy and doesn't make a mess like the Bissell. And NO BELT to worry about!

I hemmed and hawed for a couple of years on this one and made the mistake of going with a lesser and 'probably just fine' +$200 plus vac. Mine came with a 2 year warranty and I've since seen ads for 5 year warranty. Can't beat that.
