Looking for tips converting prefolds to fitted

Someone on the diapering board suggested I try converting my prefolds to fitteds to make diapering easier and help keep the poops in. I have basic instructions, but I'm looking for tips. For example, I can get 1/4" lastin pretty easily from the comfycreations group. Will this work well, or should I get FOE instead?

Can I make this work with my basic model Kenmore, or will it make me crazy? I don't have access to a serger.

Another question I have is if there is a significant difference in quality between prefold manufacturers. I've heard great things about Green Mountain, but I've seen a couple of coops for IPFs and CPFs with very attractive prices. Thanks!

i'm getting ready to convert my prefolds to fitteds using foe as soon as i can get some good foe. i am choosing foe mainly because i want a more finished edge and i do not have a serger. from what i understand, all you need to sew foe is a 3 step zig zag stich and my basic 20 yr old sewing machine has that. i really think that the foe will be quicker too since everything is done in one step.

Has instructions for converting prefolds to fitteds. I started 5 of them and they're still sitting here... I've been more efficient at just cutting a fitted diaper out of a prefold and binding it with FOE, but if you don't have FOE the above link might be for you.

I tried it with foe and it was super easy. I also did it with double fold bias tape and regular elastic. That worked but the foe is softer.

try this link, it seems to be popular and works well for me (all I have is a mini janome with straight stitch and zigzag). I tack the leg elastic down really really well at the beginning and end of the leg area, and don't sew down the length of the elastic, it seems to work better that way. An extra bonus is you can use the leftover fabric for a doubler and line it with fleece or suede for a stay-dry diaper!http://www.diapersewing.com/prefold_to_fitted.htm

As far as what diapers to use, Gerber makes several different kinds of prefolds. Some are GREAT, and others are only good as burp/dustcloths. You have to actually look at and touch the fabric to know the difference. IPF and CPF are both real workhorses, I prefer CPF. The hemp/cotton and velour/sherpa blends are really luxurious and worth it if you want to spend the extra $$. If you tear into a diaper and find out it's really thin, you can always add more layers from other fabric in the wet zone. Good luck!
