The folks at the
Long Hair Community are the best hair experts in the whole world! And yes, there are plenty of folks there from all different races, with curly hair like your daughter's. I'm sure they could give you the best advice.
Depending on how "natural" you want to go, you might want to check out the
water-only thread on that board; apparently, many people have had success washing their hair with just water. Combined with combing and scalp massage, they've achieved clean-looking, clean-smelling, ungreasy hair, and a flake-free, non-itchy, healthy scalp. (My husband is one of those people, so I'm really in a good position to know!)
What I do know is that the curlier the hair, the drier it is; you may have to actually add oils to it in order to keep it healthy and keep it from breaking. To many caucasians and asians (and other straight-haired people) this seems counter-intuitive -- but to the curly-haired folks, it really helps keep the hair strong.
Not quite as "natural" as water-only, but equally effective, there's the conditioner-only wash. Basically, you use conditioner as if it's shampoo; it has surfectants in it that clean the hair as well as moisturizing the scalp and detangling the hair. You just have to use a lot of it, leave it on for longer, and rinse it better than if you use it with shampoo. I'm sure there are natural conditioners that will do a great job with this, but (shhh! don't tell anyone!) I've had the best luck using plain old White Rain conditioner from the dollar store.
This should start you off, anyway. Hope it helps.
