Natural conditioner for mixed race hair??

My dd is half black/half white...she has beautiful, long, curly hair that gets really tangly and coarse. I have tried natural products on it and they just don't work. But, the products that do work, that I have found at Sally' Beauty supply are awful! I just used a conditioner from there on her that smelled so gross it left a caustic smell in MY mouth. yuck.
can anyone help??

The folks at the Long Hair Community are the best hair experts in the whole world! And yes, there are plenty of folks there from all different races, with curly hair like your daughter's. I'm sure they could give you the best advice.

Depending on how "natural" you want to go, you might want to check out the water-only thread on that board; apparently, many people have had success washing their hair with just water. Combined with combing and scalp massage, they've achieved clean-looking, clean-smelling, ungreasy hair, and a flake-free, non-itchy, healthy scalp. (My husband is one of those people, so I'm really in a good position to know!)

What I do know is that the curlier the hair, the drier it is; you may have to actually add oils to it in order to keep it healthy and keep it from breaking. To many caucasians and asians (and other straight-haired people) this seems counter-intuitive -- but to the curly-haired folks, it really helps keep the hair strong.

Not quite as "natural" as water-only, but equally effective, there's the conditioner-only wash. Basically, you use conditioner as if it's shampoo; it has surfectants in it that clean the hair as well as moisturizing the scalp and detangling the hair. You just have to use a lot of it, leave it on for longer, and rinse it better than if you use it with shampoo. I'm sure there are natural conditioners that will do a great job with this, but (shhh! don't tell anyone!) I've had the best luck using plain old White Rain conditioner from the dollar store.

This should start you off, anyway. Hope it helps.

Try this forum for care of ethnic, wavy, curly, and 'nappy' hair:

http://mothering.com/discussions/sho...=1#post5358746

The naturallycurly.com website also has a special section for how to care for children's curls. Those links are in the first page of that thread too, since somebody asked about it.

This site is also great:

http://motowngirl.com/no_shampoo.php

Navigate through the site and you'll find recommended products and ingredients suited for African American and coarse curly hair, the no-shampoo hair cleansing process, fun hairstyles, etc.

Good luck! Be sure to use a wide-toothed comb on your child and comb from the bottom of the hair and work your way up -- you'll have less tears and screaming that way! It also helps to keep hair braided or secured somehow (clips, cloth hairband and loose braids, etc) at night.

BTW, I agree with Conteuse above with conditioner washing. I use conditioner along with baking soda, but yeah, the cheapie conditioners work better to clean your hair because they're not so heavy with emollients. I use Suave Tropical Coconut myself

The coconut oil in the product has some cleansing properties and there is some rosemary essential oil in this Suave product that helps with hair growth. Smells fresh too!

My younger son has curly, dry hair and I try to make sure he uses conditioner after he washes his hair. Also, putting a little aloe gel on his hair after he combs it out has helped. Yesterday, I put olive oil on it, let it sit for a bit, then he washed it out, conditioned as usual and it looks much better today...shiney. Good luck!
