Looking ahead: birth control

Thought I'd just pass on this link to anyone who likes the Today's Sponge. One of the Natural Family Planning sites I belong to sent it today. It's buy a 12 pack of sponges for $31 get a 12 pack free. Which, for around here at least, is a great deal...

I will probably have my IUD put back in a few months anyway, but in the meantime I though it would be handy to have these around.

DH was talking about getting snipped, but I manged to talk him out of it for now. Since this is only our 2nd & we're both still pretty young (DH is 28, I'm 31) it just seemed prudent to wait a bit to make sure we were *really* done first. Basically we're at the place where I'd be OK with 1 or 2 more and he really feels done after the 2. Of course we may both feel different after DD2 actually arrives!

I'm trying to decide between the Mirena and the Copper-T IUD. I had the Copper-T IUD for 8 years before having it removed to TTC, and for the most part I liked it, but found that it made my periods heavier. The Mirena won't do that, but it has to be replaced every 5 years instead of every 10, making it less cost-effective.

Decisions, decisions...

I would never encourage my husband to have a vasectomy -- I don't really believe in surgically altering parts of the body that are working fine as they are, and I also think that even if we were sure we were done having kids together, I'd want him to be free to father children with another woman if something happened to me.

We plan on using condoms...

We'll go back to NFP with charting, although this method, ahem, is what led to this unplanned pregnancy. I ovulated early so I'll have to be more vigilent about everything.

My DH is undergoing the snip too. I've had trouble with every method of birth control there is and we are so done now with #3, it just makes sense. I really wanted him to go ahead and get it done this fall but he never got around to it (got his wisdom teeth out instead! ) so now we will have to make do until he is clear. Really I am afraid to let him touch me until its done!

Since I had a repeat c/s, We decided that I would just have a bilateral tubal while they were in there....DH offered to have a vasectomy.. but why should he go through that when I would already be dealing with this anyhow... I am 30 and DH is 37 and we know we only want 2 children.and if for some reason that should change one day there are plenty of children out there that need a loving home to be adopted into... also with my super high risk pregnancies/Diabetes we figured that my body has done its job with giving us 2 beautiful babies..

Well, I have not even thought about it. Maybe it is time for a conversation with DH.

I suspect it will go like this:

So honey, birth control?
Dh replies:
What do you want to do?
Me:
Shall we rely on nursing again? It worked for 21 months last time ....though I am a bit nervous...
Dh:
What ever makes you comfortable. :

I'm thinking about the Mirena IUD. We used NFP between DD and this baby and is worked fine, but we both feel really sure we are done with 2 kids. I'm not really willing to undergo surgery to have a tubal and will leave it up to dh if he's willing to have a vasectomy.

We relied on the ultra fail proof method of nursing/withdrawa and probably will again! I made it about 22 months before we got PG (miscarriage) and then concieved DD about 4 months later. I had to be on the pill for about 3 months because of the kidney donation and it confirmed that I will not do hormonal BC again. We know we want at least three, so we are too worried about a surprise.

I'll be using NFP again. I use the Taking Charge of Your Fertility software on my computer. I only had 4 cycles between getting my period back from nursing (DS1 - 14 mo.) and TTC with this baby. Got pregnant the first try.

I'm a NFP - Taking Charge of Your Fertility woman too! It was the best. I hate hormone pills. #1 they don't work, look at my dd for proof on that one!!! Why leave my fertility in the hands of a pharma corp??? It's mine and I'm going to keep it...

If I end up with a RCS, I'll be having a tubal at the same time. Otherwise, DH will be getting a vasectomy sometime in the next year.

I used fertility awareness (don't know if that is NFP) but only kept track of my periods and mucus.. It worked for 4 years. We decided to stop worrying about it and decided if 1 more was in the cards for us it would happen... and in 2 months it did. So we weren't trying and weren't not trying.
The only bad thing was abstaining, being creative or using birth control during the fertile times. That was a drag.
I was on the pill for years before DD1 and don't want to do that again. I'd love DH to get the snip snip, he's 40 and feels adament he doesn;t want to be a dad again older than this. I feel this is my last too at 38. But I don't want to push him the choice should be his not mine.

Funny, until this post, I hadn't even thought about it....sex is the furthest thing from my mind right now!
We're on number four and know we're done for sure so as soon as we can fit it into our life, dh will get the snip snip. Until then we'll just be super careful!!! Is there a way to dtd with 10 foot poles???

Have you been talking to my DH? This is hilarious! But, hey! It worked for us, too! Well, I wasn't fertile for probably 18 months (no period), and then we used NFP and a diaphragm. I got pg with this baby while doing NFP and diaphragm. This time, we will just probably go until I get my period and then have some conversation. I just don't know.

You've been hanging out in our bedroom, haven't you!?!?

I think we're going to go with an IUD, haven't decided on the mirena or the copper one yet... we know for sure that we want to have about 4 or 5 years between little ones (if we even decided to go for another one) so and IUD seems to be the best solution. I really liked Fertility Awareness, but DH's little guys live WAY longer than they were supposed to and we got this little blessing as a result... While I agree in principle with the method, I'm not willing to risk having another one so close... I'm enjoying not being pregnant!
