mice...eek!

we live in an oldold house. there are a million places that they could get in, and it's never been a problem for us before...but now I'm hearing them in the walls.
we have a cat who's pretty deadly and I've never seen them or any evidence of them in the house, but late at night I can hear them in one ceiling and wall.
I just don't know where I would even put a trap (if that's what I'd do).

any ideas? what can I do?

If you just want to repel them, try peppermint essential oil:

Otherwise, you can set traps in nooks, crannies, and baseboards of your home, where little cracks usually are.

I'll second the peppermint oil. I haven't used it personally, but I have a girlfriend who SWEARS by it!

wow. this would be so great.
I just bought a new bottle of peppermint oil for the season anyway.

and I'm not especially interested in setting traps.

...now if the peppermint oil would work for squirrels too I'd be all set.

Well, if the access points aren't closed up, and the cat or peppermint oil doesn't scare them off,the problem will just keep recurring. Might be worth seeing if there is a HUMANE wildlife control operator who works primarily on non-lethal mitigation techniques to take a look at your house.

We have been having a mouse problem too, my husband did set a few traps which I feel sick about. I am going to get to work putting peppermint oil cotton balls in all the spots that I hear them! I sure hope it works, thanks for the advice!

Apparently other critters hate the smell of peppermint too, you'll ward of all kinds of things.
