Question about testicles for a friend

Thread Starter
A friend was told that her ds, who is 1 yr, might have problems because his testicles had not dropped. This doc recommended that if they had not dropped by 2 yrs old to have a surgery to correct it b/c it would increase his risk of testicular cancer.

What is the truth?

My youngest Godson had his testicles stitched back down at the age of 4....

Parents were told it SHOULD have been done by the time he was 2, and his chances of getting Testicular Cancer are now MUCH higher....

I know there have been a few threads on this if you do a search for 'testicle'! Maybe there is some information you could use.

He might have either a undecended testical or one that just regresses from time to time. If it is the first then yes it needs to be fixed because of the cancer risk. I do believe they recommend a year old or around there. If it is the other then nothing needs to be done. From what I have read.

My ds had one that "floated", it was undescended at birth, which they said was very common, and then it started floating between his groin and his scrotum (the tube had not sealed up). We were told to "watch & wait" until age 2. At one point, we did have an ultrasound to rule out a hernia, as he had been having unexplained bouts of crying (I think this was around 4 months? mabye?) but he didn't have one, and the testicle moved to where it should be shortly thereafter and we've had no problems since.

My son had one undescended testicle, surgically brought down when he was about 14 months old.

In addition to the increased risk of testicular cancer, an internal testicle is more likely to be sterile.

My brother (who is almost 50) had both testicles brought down when he was 4, and as it turns out, he IS sterile. Of course it is impossible to say that he wouldn't have been sterile anyway, but I do wonder if it had been different if he had had the surgery at a younger age.

Does anyone have any more info about the cancer risk?
