Thanks, but it is a staph infection, not yeast. I did try disposables for a while (Tushies-chem free) and they were one of many things that didn't seem to help.

The infection has cleared up some but not completely and the antibiotics are gone. So if it's not gone by Tuesday (when the offices open again), I'll take him back in and I guess we'll try another round of antibiotics...lots of strains of Staph have become resistant and I've heard it is common to have to try a different antibiotic... If anyone knows of any alternatives, I'd love to hear.

Resistant staph

These are getting to e a problem for the healthcare industry.

One hospital was having many cases in their operating room patients. They put extreme measures in place and were still having them. They then scrubbed the entire OR down and everything in it and were still having problems unabated. Finally, they called the specialists in and eventually found the staph living in the disinfectant. Every time they would clean, they were just spreading it around more.

The current practice is to use the med that has worked before and if there is a resistant strain, they go to the newest med. That way, there is less chance of the strain becoming resistant to the newest med. It appears this is what has happened this time. It is almost 100% certain that your son picked this up at the doctor's office or the hospital.

You could try a soak in some GSE water.I like source natural brand.Maybe even a soak in some eyebright tea.Look over at the healthy.net pages for various herbals and homeopathics you can also try internally ans externally.

WEll, Leo's infection showed inmprovement, but most definitely did not clear up. I took him back in on Tuesday. The idiot doctor was like, "OMG! It doesn't look any better!" (And, yes, it DOES look a lot better : ), and then went on to tell me that he was going to prescribe more of the same antibiotics that didn't work before. I insisted on a different antibiotic. He also said that if it doesn't clear up with this round, that we have to circumcise. And I should be trying to retract the foreskin a little more every day until it will go over the head of the glans, because, as he put it, "It's just a poor design."


I hope it clears up this time. Unfortunately, the strong antibiotics he is on have a side effect of diarrhea, so now he's got diaper rash on his bum. Poor thing. I know his penis is feeling much better, because ever since day 3 or 4 of the first round of antibiotics, he's been playing with it every chance he gets. :

We are moving in 2-3 weeks and I can't wait to find a new doctor. This doc here is representative of the very limited personnel available in this rural area, and changing docs here owuld really do no good. We are moving to an area with a lot more options.

It makes me so angry that doctors, whom many look up to as sources of good information and knowledge, can get away with spreading such misinformation.

So what do I do if the infection doesn't go away with this round? I am not taking him back into that clinic....And there is no place else here. 8 days left of these antibiotics.

I can only offer my condolences about the idiot doctor.

However, I can offer some very constructive advice about the diaper rash AND it might help the infection if it's possibly yeast based. No matter, what, this will DEFINITELY help the antibiotic-induced diaper rash.

Get Leo on probiotics--acidophilus or bifidus--immediately. If you're nursing, take them too (can't hurt, and it's healthy for you too). The bifidus is generally recommended for kids under 2, while acidophilus is recommended for 2+ (though adults can take bifidus and babies can have acidophilus--go figure...).

Solaray makes a product called "Infant Bifidus" that my son and I have been taking for more than 6 months now. It costs about $15 and includes over 100 servings. Bifidus and acidophilus are "good bacteria" that are normally found in the intestinal tract (forgive me if you already know this). When you take antibiotics, the antibiotic kills ALL bacteria--good and bad--and this irritates the intestinal lining, changes the ph balance, and leaves the tract vulnerable to yeasts like candida.

I almost GUARANTEE that once you feed Leo probiotics for two or three days you'll see a HUGE improvement in the diaper rash. My son Reilly and I were on the antibiotic merry-go-round in November and early December for killer ear infections and he developed weeping rashes and we both had stomach aches. A few days of the Solaray product and bamm--we both felt much better and his diaper rash COMPLETELY disappeared. We still take it just to keep out systems healthier.

OK, as far as protecting his bum from the diahrrea, two things have worked on my kids, when one failed the other always proved effective. Bag Balm and Bert's Bees diaper rash ointment--NOT THE OTHER COMMERCIAL KINDS OF ZINC OXIDE OINTMENTS. Got that? :LOL You should notice a big difference within one diaper change. Unfortunately the big D is a bad side effect of the antibiotics, guru has great advice about the probiotics. I can't remember how old your ds is, but can you put him on a liquid diet for a day or two? The D is really ripping apart his intestine, and it needs time to heal, 48 hrs would be optimal, but do 24 with only bm and clear liquids if you can, to give his poor system a rest. Cut out roughage and grains and try to stick to softer foods--applesauce and bananas, maybe some toast, if he's over a year you can do scrambled eggs, too, after the round of clear liquids. Make sure he is getting plenty of fluids and give him an electrolyte solution, too, if he is older. UNICEF has a great recipe to make your own, sorry no time to search for you now, but I know it's on their website. I have dealt with the D many times successfully with this sage advice/regimen Please pm me if you have any questions about it.

An old wive's tale that works . . .

. . . for rashes caused by contact with poop -- apply a liquid antacid, like Maalox or Mylanta, and it will neutralize the acid on the skin, just as it would in the stomach. I know this isn't a natural remedy, but it works FAST for those diarrhea rashes. My ds slept in the nude last night bc of one of these rashes, and that helped, too. Then today once the skin had healed over, we applied lavender oil. And of course the probiotic is a must for the insides, but I think you're doing that already. HUGS to Leo!

Some of those old time wive's remedies really do work. Have you discussed this particular option, on say, the diapering boards? I'll bet you get positive feedback. And I would not be surprised if it worked more often than not.
