There is a thread buried in Books and Other Media (several pages down when I looked for it a week or 2 ago) with lots of excellent suggestions. I don’t have time to look for it right now but I’ll try to come back later and link unless some other kind soul does it first.

But I’ll just add that based on that thread I started reading My Father’s Dragon to my 4 ½ year old ds, we have 2 more chapters to go and I think that he is enjoying it. (‘No, no, don’t stop…read another chapter!) I had tried Charlotte’s Web but neither one of us really enjoyed it so this is our first book that we are really enjoying together. We’ll finish it Friday night, and Saturday I’m heading back to the library for the next one in the set!

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
James and the Giant Peach

...but don't forget to read all those really great picture books out there!!!

My dds LOVE the Junie B Jones series.

My 7 yr old son has enjoyed the Zach Files series. They are geared towards boys and are fun to read. Also, he enjoys the Scooby chapter books series. These aren't the easy-reader Scooby books, but more advanced chapter books. I read to him as he can't read at that level yet. We have read all the Magic Tree House books. He liked them, but didn't love them. We tried to get into the Dragon Slayer Academy series. I liked them, but he didn't seem to get into them. Now we are reading the Series of Unfortunate Events books. Those are fun for older kids. It's so fun when you find a really good series and so sad when you run out of books in that series!

We are reading Peter Pan right now. The unabridged J. Barrie version. Got the idea from MDC. Its to go along with the pirate ship that Santa brought him . . .

We loved the Enchanted Fored Series by Patricia Wrede, Calling Dragons, Talking to Dragons and Dealing with Dragons. They are great to read aloud with talking animals and strong characters. Also we read aloud My Friend Flick and The Railway Children.

I'm looking for suggestions too, thanks for posting.

I've read, with my 4.5 year old boys:

Stuart Little
A Mouse Called Wolf
The Wonderful Trip to the Mushroom Planet (1950s scifi, recommended by the librarian - they loved it, and I loved the short chapters!)
Charlotte's Web
The Day the Fish Went Wild

We tried to read The Wind in the Willows, but it didn't hold their interest - I think the language was a little too advanced.

I am making a list! I already have some on hold at the library. He loved Stuart Little, but I haven't been able to bring myself to read Charlotte's Web. It makes me cry.

Any more suggestions?
