I've been known to use coconut oil, cocoa butter, olive oil.

I stick to after the shower for whatever I'm going to use though.

Crisco. :

It's mostly soy bean oil. Think of it as soy butter. I put it on right out of the shower, don't even dry off very well first. Then I use a washcloth or small towell, if needed, to remove any excess water.

But I generally only use it in winter. My skin's not dry in summer.

Oh, yeah, I've been known to mix it with an EO that I like, lavender or maybe rosemary.

When I am cooking with oil, I take a dab and rub it into my cuticles, knuckles, elbows, or anywhere else that feels dry and flakey.

I also use olive oil on my nose and upper lip to prevent/soothe irritation from nose-blowing during a cold. I put some into a little dish and dip my fingertip in it, so I'm not putting my germy hands on the bottle repeatedly.

For my feet, which get very dry due to poor circulation, I use Badger Balm, an all-natural semi-solid stuff in a metal tub that I get at the food co-op. It seems pricey, but a little dab spreads a long way!

I use apricot baby oil- the BB brand, olive oil with a bit of EO, and other lotions. I use it after the shower though.

A blend of EVOO, Almond Oil and Sesame Oil...

If I've been too busy to make a batch of lotion I might whip up a batch of body butter with about 7oz unrefined shea butter, 2 oz coconut oil and 1oz of a light liquid oil like sweet almond or grapeseed with a few drops of eos.

In a pinch, I'll use the shea straight and truthfully, that's how it works best. It's just convenience & enjoyment of use that makes me want to add in softer oils & yummy eo's - then it goes on smoother and smells good. I put it on after I get out of the shower.

Jojoba oil...but I don't used soap, so I only need it on my face and sometimes in colder weather on my legs.

Unrefined shea butter. But I'd like to give velcromom's recipe a whirl.

What are some cheap online sources for natural butters? I've seen FromNatureWithLove.com but I hear that by comparison, it's expensive.

Maybe I should start a new thread but...

For the unrefined shea butter, how do you spread it around? I bought some of the Now shea butter, but I have a hard time spreading it. It's more like a big hard blob than something that's spreadable.

Am I making any sense? :

All butters are solid at room temperature, including shea and cocoa butter. You have to take a blob and warm it up in your hands (rub it together) until it liquidifies or at least, turns more like lotion. Then apply as usual.

Okay, I'll try that...thanks!

I use cocobutter...you know the palmers stuff? Hmm love how it smells kind of like chocolate if ykwim?

Have to go back to velcromoms recipe here for a minute. I have 7 oz of unrefined shea butter sitting in the cupboard waiting to meet its full potential ...how do I start mixing everything?!

strathconamama....i just stick it in a bowl and start whipping with a mixer (i use a hand mixer)...if you melt it at all, you run the risk of it getting grainy...just whp at room tep and once it srats to get "whppy looking drizzle in your liquid oils and continue whipping till desired consistency.
