Vaporizer & mold -- help!

I have 2 cool mist vaporizer/ humidifiers going in the house right now since it's so dry. Both are on the smallish side.

Anyways, one uses a filter and the other didn't come with one (and doesn't have a space for a filter)... and they both have this orange colored yuck growing in them. I take them apart and clean them about once / week. But it keeps coming back. Is it mold some other gross stuff growing in there?

What can I do to stop/prevent that stuff from coming back?

Add some tea tree oil and vinegar to the water or just vinegar by itself. You won't smell much of the vinegar if you put a tablespoon or two or so.

Where we live we get that orangy pink slime on anything water touches. It's something with the city water though. We have to constantly wash/change filters, change out shower liners, etc. Yuck!
