Is circ routine anywhere in the world?

I have a question, are there countries in the world where male circ is still routine???

In New Zealand this practice stopped about 15 years ago. I have two intact sons.

Is it routine in America still?

Unfortunately, yes, it is. But there are bright spots. On the west coast (California and Washington) the rate is less than 50%. Overall, the national rate is about 60--65% circ'd. We're making progress, slowly but surely. That's why this board (MDC Case Against Circ) matters so much to us intactivists in America!

I heard its also routine in S. Korea, Puerto Rico & parts of Mexico.

In Iran and any other Muslim country it's probably close to 100%.

oh my gosh wow........
they stopped doing it in New Zealand 15 odd years ago
now I understand why there is so much activism about it - i couldn't get my head around it

I'm in Arizona and I only know of two boys in real life who are intact (except for my son of course!)...and that is in 4 1/2 years of play groups and what-not.

I wish and hope that it will be stopped very soon. It seems odd to me that the USA, being one of the most advanced countries in the world, is behind on THIS issue. Baffles me.

It is hard to get your head around, I agree. I mean its been rare for a couple of generations.

Every so often some crusty old doctor tries to get their 15 minutes of fame by talking up circ but then everyone forgets again..
I don't know barely any guy under 35 without his foreskin... And believe me I've seen a fair few.
And if I can say this I'm from a community that folks would associate with strict adherence to this practice yet all but one of my male exs (and he was late 30s anyway) who were from that same community were intact.

I find it mindboggling that something so unusual would be so common in a country not all that culturally different from here, I have a great deal of sympathy for what parents & children are up against.

amazing
and yeah that to what you said etsba

you know it's a bit like you finding out we routinely do female circ in New Zealand ( we don't of course - I'm just making a point) - this is how amazed i am to hear male circ is STILL routine in America:

i totally sympathise with mamas who have circ'ed their sons because it was routine

good luck intactivist mamas

yeah, here it definitely is. and in a lot of places, youre crazy for not doing it. :sigh:

muslim countries, its because of their religion, its not 'lets hack it off cause we can and think of some assinine reason that its a good thing' : , ya know?

btw- puerto rica is technically in the usa

It is also routine in the Philippines though it is not done at birth. It done before puberty due to the social stigma being supot(intact). Unfortunately boys are made to feel they will be an outcast and be rejected by Filipino women if they refuse to have it done however there are anti-circ movements growing there so hopefully the trend will change.

True about the Philippines. BUT, at least, 95% of little boys I see here are intact since they do it later.

When we lived in AZ, I saw a ton of intact boys. Not in my immediate circle unfortunately, but at swim class, even people who looked totally mainstream and 'wasp-y'! (my son was born at Chandler Regional in '01 and I got kudos from the nurses for keeping him intact)

I spoke to a girl from India and she said they do it there because they beleive it helps with fertility. :

My 2nd DD was born at Chandler Regional.

My first DD at Banner Desert.

My son at Banner Baywood....when he was born the nurses looked at me like I was : when I said I was not circumcising. One imparticular TOLD me he would be circumcised the next day and when I kindly said "NO," she questioned me and then rolled her eyes and said, "whatever." I only had one nurse who came in and just said that at the hospital she used to work at (in Seattle I think) they had a pretty low circ rate. She didn't act like she cared one way or another though.

I had a similar issue when I took my son in at 2 weeks for a routine appointment. The women who weighed him jumped back a bit and asked, "Why isn't he circed?" I told her I chose not to have it done and she asked if I was doing it soon? HELLO?! NO!!! Did ya not hear me the first time?

Yes, it is. In the middle of the country, where I live, the circ. rate is about 80%-90%. We have so much work to do!
