Fingernails and knitting

I have been thinking that I'd like to make a little video for youtube which shows my method of knitting back and forth without turning the work. There are several ways to do this and I just thought it would be interesting because it comes in VERY handy for things like short rows- knitted borders and textured patterns and lace which are difficult to track on the purl side.

But first I thought I should check youtube and see what videos already exist of that sort (I couldn't find one)

Watching the videos though, I noticed and was impressed with what pretty manicures all the knitters had and became very aware of how awfully grubby my own hands look because of all the farm work I do... hmmm... maybe I'll rethink making a vid...

and then I came across this video with a manicure to beat all. Oh my- this is some serious business! All I can say is that I know she can knit- but there is NO WAY that she can groom a horse or shear a goat!

I think it's really neat that she has shared her technique. I'm sure she gets asked about it all the time.

oh wow.
I'm amazed she can knit! :

I went to highschool with a girl that had nails like that!

I might get flamed... but I personally think that nails like those are gross...:

I knit back and forth too. I modify all my patterns in my head to get them so I don't have to turn my work.

Sure she can knit. But can she use a Diva Cup? Youch!

I like the knit back and forth concept. Thanks for the idea of looking up YouTube vids. I'd love to see your technique and promise not to complain about your nails.

I found this. I'm doing alright with it, but it's going to be a while before reverse knitting is faster than turning and purling.

I had a hard time watching the actual knitting, I couldn't see past her nails. The librarian in my town as a child had crazy long nails like that, and she couldn't pick the book tickets up off the desk, she slid them to the edge so she could pick them up as they slid off the side.

The nails creep me out. But the other videos....wow.... I really liked that brioche stitch! I have never tried it, but now that I have seen it I can totally do that. Maybe a quicky baby hat for the 6 month old! COOL.

So on the subject of youtube knitting videos... did anybody see the portugese knitting with the two crochet hook looking needles? I coudn't figure it out- other than looking incredly tight and "fiddly" I didn't get the point of it- it looked (to me) that they were just producing stickinette at the end of all that work- but the pictures of the finished cloth were not really that clear- does anyone know- is the portugese knitted cloth something different?

It actually makes me a little queasy thinking of the zoology that must make it's home there. OMG. There is no way to keep those things cleaned.

I had to get acrylics one time in hs for a photo shoot- I had them the shortest they would let me and had to rip them off that night because they were sooooo gross.

Maybe that's just my own personal hygiene issues, but long nails like that really do make me physically ill.

I'll run for cover now.

My 9 year old dd declared it "gross"!

And yes, I'd love to see your video- I don't really care that your fingernails look like you work outside!
