How to get awful burnt smoke smell out of microwave?

So last night DH decided to melt caramel to make himself a caramel apple. He read the directions, they said 3 min on high, so he did 2 to be safe...but the directions for a whole package, not 5 caramels. 2 minutes later the house is full of smoke, alarms going off, the works. My microwave appears to be permanently stained yellow and I'm really not sure if the smell will ever go away! Any suggestions? At the moment I am heating a bowl of vinegar and water in there hoping it may eliminate some odor...but I'm not sure it's working.

I heard heating a bowl with some lemon slices in it works, but I'm not sure.

My youngest tried to microwave a rice sack (flannel bag full of rice that you heat in the microwave as a heating pad) all by herself. Instead of 2 minutes, she put it in for 22. By the time I found it, 7 min later, it was SMOKING! It took less than a week for the smell to go away. The thing that really helped was microwaving a bowl with about 1 cup water plus a tablespoon of lemon juice. It didn't get rid of the smell totally, but it helped.

That trick also works well for loosening cooked on food inside the microwave. Just wipe down the walls afterward. :-)
