Birth Pool resources and information - Page 9

Ok, thanks!!!

What would your plan be if you tend to precip? My last labor was less than two hours, start to finish and it was intense. I am concerned I wouldn't be able to get the pool filled in time to use it.

Get a smaller pool like La Bassine. They are still large enough to be comfortable - the reduction in size is because the shape is oval rather than round (round pools are a waste of space in my opinion, just taking more water to fill but not offering any real size advantage since your body is long, not round). Be sure to turn your hot water heater up as high as it will go before the birth. Blow the pool up ahead of time, it should only take about 30 minutes to fill.

thanks!

Thanks so much for this thread, I went and bought the star shaped pool on clearance for 12 bucks last night after reading though this thread, much cheaper than the rental fee I was going to pay for the eco birth-tub

I've tried to read through this thread, but my eyes are starting to cross. What's the deepest pool available that anyone has found? Looks like 22" is average. I'm a very big girl and I definitely need something deeper than that to be comfortable. I found one that was 24" but I don't know if that will be enough.

The deepest pool I found was the Birth Pool in a Box. That's what I chose since I feel like I'm a bigger girl at 5'7'' and 225 pounds (not pregnant). I'm really glad we spent the extra money on the BPIAB. I absolutely loved it. It was deep enough, the padded floor was great, I used the handles, and the sides were large enough for me to lean on comfortably. It can hold a 200 pound person sitting on the side safely.

Yes! The "Spa in a Box" available on Ebay and Walmart dot com is heated. I used it with #3 and it was FAB!!
I love it so much I am going to buy one to have available to rent in my area.

Here's us using the spa with #3

I have no idea, but it looks awesome! And exactly what I've been looking for.

It says lower on the page that it is a "Spa 2 Go" I searched for it, and they sell them through ebay and many other online stores.

La Ba$$ine or Fishy pool?

I have read this entire thread, but I am still unsure: shell out the big bucks for La Bassine, or keep it simple with a fishy pool? I really envision myself leaning alot on the sides, etc, so I worry the fishy pool would not be supportive enough (also maybe for the midwife to lean in). The La Bassine looks wonderful.

Thoughts?

Hot water hook-up

I have tried to read carefully over these posts and have not found an answer to my question.

I am wondering if i can hook the hose straight to my hot water valve under the kitchen sink. We have one of those fancy 2-way spray, pull-out-hose, faucet thingys and a hose wont attach to that.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

i know this thread started a while and the mama with the PVC has long since given birth, but one of our local midwives makes cloth liners for the tubs she sells so it's an option for others that may have allergies/senstivities to still birth in the standard pools on the market without any problem. if you're crafty, you can make your own liner!

i had a fishy pool last time and really want a la bassine. i really wanted one last time, too, but our midwife gives us the fishy pool as part of her services and free vs. $100, well we went with free. i labored in the pool but ended up birthing on my bed and i'd really hate to shell out the big bucks and not even have a waterbirth this time around but the la bassines are NICE!!!

I just wanted to share that I just bought the Sevylor Electra pool for our homebirth for only $35.96 w/ shipping!! :

I got it from this site and it ships out much faster than the Ship store (we are 36 weeks and need it here faster than the 3-6 week ship date they gave and quite a bit cheaper too! Plus I put in a coupon code search for them and got shipping for only a buck! I'm so excited and can't wait to birth in our pool!

: btw..thank you so much for this thread! It is a life saver and wonderful! Big thanks to StacyL for all her great info and sharing it with us

Pool Weight and stability???

So I started a thread, but maybe my question is better answered here?

I want to use a pool for my next birth in January, and the hospital admin is balking because of the weight of the pool. It is a small older hospital and he is worried we will collapse the floor? Crazy I know, but I need some official information to get to him to try and change his mind.

Can anyone point me to a website or something? I just want a smaller, oval shaped pool I think...

My back-up midwife is loaning us the BPIAB that her old clients used for their birth. I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy one liner or two. The websites seem to suggest that you'd need a liner if you want to do a trial run (which we'll do). But do I really need a liner for the trial run, then another liner for the birth? Seems like overkill to me.

I know I'll need one for the birth itself... but if I'm just hopping in and out for the trial run, what's the point?

Also, has anyone borrowed a birth pool and had to disinfect it? Would you use bleach (I HATE bleach!)... or would water/vinegar do the trick?

I guess if I'm getting a liner, I don't need to worry about this... but just wondering.

Thanks for your advice!

I actually submitted my own question (about reusing the liner) to waterbirth international, and Barbara Harper herself responded that night. Here's her response:

"Hi Christi,

For my money, you can reuse the liner, especially in the situation that you described. For our third world clients we have even suggested that they clean the liner and reuse it - to save on expenses.

I don't even think you would need to turn it inside out - simply dry it down or hang it to dry. You'll be fine.

Wishing you all the best,
Barbara"

So I bought one liner...

Thank you all so much for the tips in this thread. Dh and I just blew up our BPIAB and was trying to figure out how to fill it. This thread (and pictures!!!) helps a lot.
