Fabric Dye

As a birthday party activity I was thinking of giving each child a white t-shirt and letting them spray on different color dyes. I'd have a variety of colors on spray bottles and I'll hang the shirts on a wire outside.

What should I use for the dye in the spray bottles. Is there anything that will not stain the children and is safe for them to spray themselves?

What would be real simple would be to get a fabric paint and water it down(1:1 ratio) so it will spray more easily. I Generally use Liquides med. viscosity artists paint. It is not a fabric paint per se but it works the same way.

Would concentrated Kool Aid work? I know it won't dye cotton fabric very deeply, more staining it. But it would smell good and be safe.
