Need an international news story

My son is in fifth grade -- he needs to present a current event at school, that is from " a world news event." (We are in the US, so he needs something not in the US!)

Our trouble: He does not want to report on anything related to war, terrorism, violence, or sports. We aren't finding anything interesting outside those areas! Can anyone help? Something cultural, or science related, maybe? Or religious would be interesting too. But something *nice.*

This would probably get more responses in News and curent events.

I was going to suggest the bbc too. He could also try npr.org. I heard an interesting story yesterday about the building of the first mosque in East Berlin. That might be interesting. Or maybe something about the hajj, which just ended a couple of days ago.

Venezuelan Orchestras Help At-Risk Children

Listen to this story... by Juan Forero

All Things Considered, January 5, 2007 · For more than 30 years, a man known to Venezuelans as Maestro Abreu has run a system of orchestras that teach classical music to thousands of Venezuelan children.

Many of the young pupils are poor and from violent barrios. Some have gone on to become well-known conductors and musicians in Europe.

While most of them don't become musicians, the program teaches discipline and teamwork -- and it keeps the children off the street.

you think so?
I don't think I have ever seen a (non-terrorism/war) story that did not involve the US in N&CE.

eta: yeah, BBC is probably your best bet for "world" news stories. They have breakdowns by region, and topic in the sidebar, so it's easy to find what you want.

This website looks cool:

http://www.worldnews.com/

It's broken down into different regions.

HI MAMADUCK! I wondered if you were still around! Everytime I am in your state I think of you and the center! I hope all is well!

Maybe Yahoo "Odd News"...that may have a fun, interesting story in it!

Hi there sho! How are you doing? Nice to see you. DS found a funky fun story about a letter that got mailed to england with a map instead of an address -- and still found its way to the proper home. Right up his alley.

We are doing good, PM me sometime? Is your son in public or private school? Just curious if he was in one of the "well known" schools out there. I went to the Rollins house a few weeks back and there are always many people from those schools there.

Sorry for being vague, I do nto know how much privacy you keep here regarding location, etc.
