Talk to me about snap presses. please?

My little guy appears to have an allergy to the metal snaps that are found on almost all baby clothes. I need to swap them out for plastic ones before I go crazy, as there are very few clothes that don't have them. He gets red bullseye rashes where ever they touch his skin that take a couple of days to clear up.

I would also like to make diapers using the plastic snaps

Advice and suggestions about what I need and the best, quickest cheap way to do this please. I am in Canada, so that may make a difference as well.

So the questions about my options:

1. Somewhere I saw someone using a drill press to set snaps - a search brings up nothing about it - any thoughts, experiences, links to threads or info? Dh has an industrial drill press sitting in the garage

2. I keep seeing references to getting one from Serena, does she still do this and how do I contact her is that is the best option?

3. Other vendors, snap source etc. for shipping to Canada who will have what I need for the most reasonable price.

4. What size dies/snaps do I need for diapers and infant/child's clothing?

Any advice about nickel allergies would also be welcome and needed.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear of your little guy's allergy and I hope I can help you out a bit!

1. Here's a thread about using a drill press to put on snaps: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...ht=drill+press. I thought about it but in the end a snap press seemed like a better choice for me since it takes up less space.

2. Here's the site to order from Serena. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/notionsupply/. Her package contains a snap press, size 16 and 20 dies, plus $50 worth of snaps for $125. I just ordered from her and I'm waiting on my press to arrive. Her customer service is excellent!

3. I'm in the US so I don't have any advice for shipping to Canada -sorry!

4. Size 20 snaps are the most widely used for cloth diapers. Size 16 might be better suited for children's clothes though, especially in the leg/crotch area.

HTH!

I just have to put in a good word for Serena! I just gone mine from her! *(my Christmas present) The $125 package includes shipping from China, plus she threw in a bunch of extra snaps and some size tags. I received it in less than two weeks and this was over Christmas and New Years. Just practice a few times before you use it for real and it is very easy to use. Oh and ask her for a snap color card so you can see all the colors she has for future ordering.

ETA: I doubt shipping to Canada is much different than the US since she is in China.

I bought a snap press from the One Stop Diaper shop about a year ago and I'm happy with it, but if I were to do it over again, I'd buy a KAM one from Serena.

It took me forever, but I found a snap store in Canada! http://www.snap-happy.net/catalog/

They are really nice there. Unfortunately, she doesn't sell presses.
