Do you know this book?

When I was a child, I read a book about a boy (I think) who whips up a special sauce (I think) that everyone loves. I think he sold/marketed it. I also think he was home alone or with a really non-attentive caregiver. It must have had illustrations. I remember a picture of the boy (I think) in the kitchen making another batch.

What is this book?

Is that the story, where its magic fudge and if you eat:

1) one piece you like animals
2) two pieces and you can understand them
3) three and you become the animal you are thinking about

No, but that sounds like a cool book, too.

I think what he made in this story is like a gravy. It seems like there was a woman, older, possibly not related, like a teacher or neighbor involved in the story.

Isn't this one The Wednesday Witch? I loved Ruth Chew as a child. I'll have to check her out again...

It's not Stone Soup or Freckle Juice.

I think the gravy was supposed to make "icky" things taste better. Maybe? Man, I wish I remembered more specifics!

Correct author, the title was "No such thing as a witch". Its a fun book teaching kids not to judge one another and to see things from others points of view

This books sounds a heck of a lot like The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill. A little boy decides he wants to save cash on toothpaste so he gets help from some friends and a teacher and starts making toothpaste and selling it locally. Eventually he ends up making millions from it.

Now, I don't really know if this is what you're looking for, but your description reminded me of George's Marvellous Medicine. Even if it isn't what you're looking for, it's certainly worth a read. Then again, I'm a sucker for everything by Roald Dahl

I don't think any of the suggestions so far are what I'm looking for, but I am getting some good ideas for new books to check out.

Oh darn it, I know exactly which book you are talking about, I can almost see the pictures in my mind…and I have no idea of what the title is. Now it’s gonna bug me until someone figures it out!

I don't think it's Marvellous Medicine. I don't remember anyone getting bigger or smaller from it.
