I would imagine it would vary greatly family to family. Maybe you can log how much beef you eat over a couple of weeks?

For us, I think longer than half a year but not quite a full year, depending on the cuts and how I use them. (I'm assuming we'd eat beef 2-3 times a week, and probably eat about 1.5 to 2 pounds a meal ... we are a family of 5, but the youngest is currently 7 months, so he won't eat much. But our dog will partake, so he'll make up the difference with the baby. ) Basically, take the weight (aren't most steers about 600 pounds of meat? so that would be 300 pounds for your family) and divide by how much meat, in general, you'd eat in one meal ... it should give you a rough estimate of how many meals/days it will last.

Do you mean a split half?Or a whole half side? My kids barely eat meat, so me anddh aren't making much progress in our split half yet
As they get older(read:teen years) I may have to get a whole half.

dh doesn't eat beef, so it's just me and my girls. Granted, they're both hard core carnivore but, the little one has a thing against food that requires chewing, so she pigs out more on nights when we make ground beef than on steak.

Anyway, we split a quarter, so that's 1/8, about three times a year. So, a full side would last us over a year. But, we're a smaller family than you - one adult and one and a half meat eating kids, so approximately half as much load on that beef.

1/4 of beef lasts my family 9 months or so.
