mama cloth and yoga pants??

mama cloth-using mamas help me out!

i'm starting a new yoga class DAY AFTER TOMORROW and i have one pair of (very form fitting!) yoga pants..... the last time i took a yoga class this was not an issue since i was not menstruating. : but..... now i am and i have extremely heavy periods.

USUALLY this is not an issue since at home / work i can wear my long hippie skirts and hide my (very bulky) cloth pads. but i really don't want to have a huge crotch in stretchy black pants in front of a roomful of people in a room covered in mirrors.

... suggestions anyone? i really don't want to have to go back to tampons or even disposable pads, and i CANNOT use things like the diva cup (because of -- er, internal issues ).... so.... er, wwyd??

Maybe invest in some flowier yoga pants, or check out hemp momma-pads, hemp is very absorbent so you can use a thinner layer and still absorb a lot. Just a couple of ideas.

Personally, if it were me, I would visit the bathroom right before class and insert an unbleached tampon.

Most yoga classes don't last longer than an hour or so, and I wouldn't have a problem using some sort of internal protection for that long. I can understand if you might, and I respect that, but for just an hour I would find an alternative to the bulky cloth pad.

(I've even heard of some people making their own reusable tampons from 100% cotton baby socks or something -- would something like that be an option for you, for the hour to hour and a half that your class will last?)

You can always revisit the washroom after the class is over, and put the cloth back into place.

Another option is simply to wear a skirt over your yoga pants (a shorter one, preferably) because if you're menstruating you shouldn't be doing any of the inverted poses anyway.

yeah i was thinking a skirt is probably preferable to any other option.

thanks mamas.

I used to take a yoga class for a couple years and never had a problem using pads. Nobody noticed. I'd say no worries ~

There are some trial yoga classes in my work's building this week and today was the first trial day. I am just starting my period (not much today), but I needed to go purchase some athletic pants/yoga pants because I forgot to bring some. TJMaxx has great drawstring pants (at really reasonable prices) that you can wear. The loose ones are great because you can wear them to bed or lounge around the house or walk the dog in. I don't ever buy the ones that make my legs and butt look sausage-y

aura how did it go? when I was doing yoga at a studio I had this little semi-sheer wrap skirt to go over my butt. I got it at a leotard place. I wasn't comfy with my back end hanging out (there's a lot of it) and the skirt covered everything but was short enough to not get in the way.

it went well. the handouts for the class specify "no loose clothing; wear form fitting yoga wear." but the wrap skirt is a good idea.

i was wearing cargo pants over my yoga pants but since it was the first day nobody changed anyway.

eta ~ i got way more comments about my pit hair.

If you can use tampons, would sea sponges be an option (jade & pearl is the brand I've seen)? They operate on the same principal as a tampon (something inserted inside you to absorb all fluids) but then you rinse them out & re-use as needed. Even if you don't want to use them all the time, might be an option for class?

yuck. thanks but no thanks.

i honestly hate - HATE!!! - insertable feminine hygiene products. i made the mistake of wearing a tampon for class today -- : i was horribly uncomfortable the entire time. :

I've never used "insertable" products, but am considering the Diva cup because I am bleeding profusely these days and it's ruining my life. If somebody's never used insertable stuff before, will your body always want to um... spit it out, and/or or be uncomfortable?

That was always the case for me when I tried insertable products. That and constant discomfort in my groin area.

Namaste!
