Best fabrics for DIY Fuzzi-Bunz Inserts?

Hi Ladies,

I'm getting ready for baby number two and I'm excited about using my Fuzzi-Bunz again. I do need new inserts and can't believe the crazy prices! I want to make my own but I'm not sure what to use. I did use prefolds as inserts in the past, but would prefer something else. (I found them too bulky.)

And unfortunately I'm in Canada and don't have have a Sam's Place nearby to get the great deal on microfibre towels... (Great idea though!)

Thank you!

Costco has yellow microfibre automotive towels in packs of 20-- that's what we use to stuff our pockets (1 for day, 2 for night) -- fold them in 3. They are large enough that you could probably use 1/2 for each insert for smaller sizes.

My favorite inserts are hemp jersey. Super absorbant and trim.

You could trim the prefold to fit better. I have a heavy wetter and that is the only thing that worked well enough for us.

Thank you! The costco idea is great! I have a good friend with a membership. Hmmm...

Update: In this part of the world Costco won't be carrying the car towels until the spring. Darn! I'll check Walmart.

Where do you buy the hemp jersey Kari Mom? How many layers do you use? Is there a quality I should look for in hemp jersey? I just got a sewing machine and would love to make my own inserts for my fuzzibunz.

I use the microfiber towels, too. I got mine at Walmart (they're blue and white) in a pack of 25 for $9.99. I don't sew them at all, just fold them up. I've thought about sewing them into inserts, but they dry faster if I leave them how they are, b/c they open up in the wash

How would you turn a prefold into a fitted insert? Just cut and sew the edges? If you double them will they ever dry? Thanks!

Do you mean as an insert for a pocket, or as an internal (sewn-in) soaker? When I was using prefolds as inserts, I didn't do anything to them, just folded it and stuffed it in. I did try to sew one into an insert, and it took forever to dry, which is why I decided to leave them as-is.

raeanneb -- I do mean as an insert for a pocket diaper. I also used to fold them and stuff them in, but I found them kind of bulky for a newborn.

Maybe I'll just cut them to size but not double them. Does that make sense? And I can always just use two or three if more absorbancy is required.

I just got some from the yahoo group "all natural fabrics". But I never made an insert and would love to know how to make them with a sewing macine - not serger.

Not sure what part of Canada you are in, but have you tried Fabricland? Or Fabricana.... Fanny's Fabrics..?? I find that I can find most things at Fabricland. They go by a different name out east I think.

I bought the microfibre towels at Walmart in BC over Christmas. They were more pricey then in the US though. I looked at Fabricland but couldn't find anything there.

I have microfiber towles but I don't like the sticky feeling on my hands. Now I'm all about bamboo velour, so yummy!

I really like using old towels for inserts. 3 layers is really great absorbancy. If you have a serger you can cut out 3 layers of the shape you want, serge around each layer individually and then sew the front edge and back edge together leaving them open on the sides. That way they dry fast but you get lots of absorbancy.

They take forever to dry if you T&T and it's hard to get through the edges if you do that too.

I would love to do this too. If I try and it works I will get back to you. I'm very new to sewing.

I found microfiber Kitchen towels in Dollarama (we have them here in Ontario) last week. They are larger than a regular handtowel and make a wonderful copy of a cottonbabies microfiber insert when folded in 5 layers:

White is the cottonbabies insert, pink is my microfiber one. I jjust copied the snap placement. The snaps are not really necessary though.

I'm in Ottawa Canada and interested in the same thing!
I bought hemp online last time and they were phenomenal. But, I still need more and I would like to try my hand at making them (and to get some use out of my serger!!).
