I can't find any that isn't made of plastic or vinyl. What is it for anyway? Is it to make your shelfs stay clean? (Because my shelfs are ancient and clean is not an option.) Is it possible to clean off the old adhesives (from old shelf liners) and seal the wood w/ a natural product? TIA

Shelf liners are great to keep moisture and spills from warping or damaging your furniture or cabinetry. It keeps your furniture clean and it also evens out the surface to a degree so that you can put things in it and it won't fall over. Some of the non-skid shelf liners are great to cushion delicate items like glasses. Sometimes it absorbs humidity (like from cooking or the bathroom) from wood so that it won't sag and warp. Some kinds can even have mildew/mold-resistant or pest-deterrent properties.
You can find sheets of cork at Bed Bath and Beyond (used as shelf liner) and possibly Home Depot. Cork is a renewable resource that has great anti-skid and cushioning properties. It's fairly durable, but it may not be as scrubbable or long-lasting as vinyl or plastic. It's a good choice though.

The old timers used wrapping paper cut to the correct shape.
Old wrapping paper is a bit thicker than the modern cheap stuff. If you go with quality wrapping paper it should be fine.
The stuff last and stays just fine without and fastening down.
