If You Really Knew Me...

Hey girls! I saw this thread on another board I belong to and I thought it was pretty cool. It's a fun way to see what you have in common with other mommies out there...

Here's mine:
-I am a night owl. I'll stay up waaay too late reading a good book or hoping to catch someone I like on Leno or Letterman. Bad habit.

-I love to read and do crossword puzzles. Books are an addiction for me, too, and I feel like my favorites are 'old friends'. LOL! I can read favorites over and over again.

-I HATE reality TV with the exception of American Idol-which I LOVE!

-I have been fighting depression for almost 10 years now, and have lost jobs because of it. I am finally in a very good place, because of my family, my doctors, and the medication I take. Phew.

-I am a Christian and I love our church. I have recently discovered that if you wear your faith like a badge and treat people with love and kindness, the world often responds in kind.

-I can write you a dirty limmerick lickety split.

-I am a wine-o. I l-o-v-e wine.

-I love artichokes, but sometimes they make me gag. Weird, I know. It's a texture thing, I think. Broccoli too.

-I hate spiders, and most everything that is creepy crawly. -shudder- I saw something in my basement with a million legs and RAN LIKE THE DEVIL HIMSELF WAS CHASING ME UP THE STAIRS! LOL!

-I think my twin nephews are weird and funny-looking.

-I am a homebody, although I think a lot of that is a symptom of my depression.

-I love golf, but I SUCK.

-I totally believe in ghosts and think I have a little ESP. I love Ghost Hunters! I'd love to go on a ghost hunt but am scared to pieces thinking about it. We live very close to the second oldest cemetery in Grand Rapids and I'd love to go over there at midnight with a camera, but wouldn't want to do it alone....

-I am an indie-rock and 80's music freak. I listen to a lot of stuff that noone has ever heard of, but I don't care.

-I am a true American mutt, but identify with my Irish heritage. I look Irish-pale, freckly, reddish hair. I can't wait to visit someday.

I guess that's it for now...
How about you girls???

~I've got crazy, curly red hair and a personality to match.

~Some of my fondest memories, pre-kids, is of hitting the road with my best friend in my early 20's and following the Grateful Dead.

~We still love taking our kids to kid-friendly music festivals in the Summer time and if there is a drum circle to be found, I'm right in the middle of it.

~I can't stand commercial TV, for the most part. I think TV is pretty bad for kids, generally. However, I loved watching animal planet while I was in the hospital.

~We have music playing 95% of our waking hours and I don't know what we did before getting Sirius. I love an eclectic variety of music, from reggae to swing, classical to old school hip-hop.

~I love watching birds and would never want to live somewhere where I could see neighbors, hear traffic or didn't have trees and nature surrounding us.

~I am not only vegetarian, but jello-phobic. Once I learned what gelatin *really* was made of, I think it may be one of the most disgusting things I had ever eaten in my life. Blech.

~I have a thing for guys with long hair and would cry for a long time if Jay ever cut his dreadlocks. (As a side note, we rented Pirates of the Carribean last week and I have 4 words for ya~ Dirty, dreadlocked pirate. Yum. )

So how are we supposed to do this? Just state random things about us or pick things others have said?

I just put random things about myself... I'll add one more just for fun:

If you really knew me, you'd know that....

If I have spare money, I always end up spending it on my DH or my boys!

Let's see

- I am a vegetarian

- DH is a hippy and a deadhead too

- The kids are tv free but I am addicted to Grey's anatomy, Lost and Desperate Housewives

- My grandmother is French Canadian

- I am a loner who loves the outdoors (with my family)

-I have emetophobia

-also ophidiphobia (anyone know what those are without looking them up? )

-I have't flossed my teeth since DD#2 was born :

-this is the first board on MDC I check every morning (and loving how we've picked up the posting over the past couple of days! Nice work, mamas!)

-I watch way, way, WAY too much television. I dream of accidentally drop-kicking it out of the landing because I don't have the willpower to not turn it on.

-I dream of getting a breast reduction some day

-I DESPISE lying. It makes me crazy mad when people lie to me, not matter what it's about.

-I actually wish I didn't have a driver's license. Don't ask why. I'm just wierd like that

...I would never be here if it weren't for my sister. She's a total crunchy social activist SAHM - lives and breathes every part of natural parenting. I always thought she was completely nuts, since I'm an MBA with an intense Manhattan job and always just believed what everyone in the mainstream believes. But thank goodness watching their example and listening to them started changing my mind. Then she gave me a copy of Mothering magazine and the Sears Baby Book when I got pg and that was that.
...I'm a working mom, doing my best to balance things and do what's right by my babies. Now my co-workers think I'm crazy ("wow, you're still pumping?" "what's a midwife?")
...I'm a half-assed, would-be vegetarian. Left to my own devices i'd prefer not to eat meat, for lots of good reasons, but when faced with a lack of choices on a restaurant menu or dh's aversion to meatless meals, I sadly cave
...I'm an avid reader of sci-fi/fantasy series, to the point that there's not much that's worth reading out there any more I haven't already finished
...And I supplement this obsession with whatever good fantasy is on TV - long-lost Buffy/Angel/Firefly, currently Battlestar Galactica and Supernatural (ok, Supernatural's not so great but those boys are pretty cute), and someone just told me to check out Heroes - I'm hooked after one rerun
...All I wanted growing up was to get out of the NJ suburbs...but here I am
...I majored in Art History with a minor in Medieval Studies
...I'm a "recovering catholic" - after growing up with forced religion in my family, I hid from church for years, but the miracle of childbirth brought us back. Luckily, we found the Episcopal church - all the traditional service ritual you love, without any of those pesky intolerant anti-woman/gay/birth control dictates you hate
...I have a terrible diet pepsi habit - in the mornings, for breakfast
...I've been to Italy 4 times and never get tired of it. I would go every year if DH would let me.

I hate chores of any sort. My house is clean, but usually messy.
I hate a messy house, lol. But I'd rather play with my kids or read or play on the computer.

I stay up way too late. (Think 2-3 am) I like the peace and quiet at night.

I homeschool my dd because I used to be a teacher in the district where she would go and I can't bear the thought of sending her there even though I know that there are some really good teachers.

I can be a control freak.

I'm a loner. I have just a couple close friends and I barely get to see them.

I like to hang out with my parents. I love to see how they interact with my kids. It feels like reliving my childhood through an adult's eye.

My mil is cool most of the times and respects me even when we disagree. My fil drives me nuts and most of the time I just tolerate him, even though most people would consider him a nice guy.

I suppose it's hard to really know me... I dress conservative, am socially liberal, fiscally conservative, a liberal Presbyterian, don't really buy in to any philosophy 100%, have a tatoo, have had a pierced tongue & nostril...

Find making small talk excruciating (sp?)... hello DH's work Christmas party!!!

Mothering hasn't come as naturally to me as I thought it would

I don't enjoy breastfeeding, but am super proud to have made it this far!

Love my teeth, hair & feet

Hate my thick waist

Choose not to disagree with my father on just about anything because it takes too much energy

Share a house w/ my mom (who dh, dd & i adore!)

lived in Australia from 99-04 w/ dh

became a midwife in Australia

love talking about sex.. it's so much fun!

before dh & i met when we were 20, i'd slept w/ 7 guys (mostly good experiences), he was a virgin & it's never, ever been an issue for us

Here's mine...

I'm almost always late. Although since the baby, this has suprisingly gotten much better. I think it's because I KNOW that everything will take much longer than I anticipate.

I'm a nurse midwife, but if I ever go back to work, it won't be as a midwife.

I love to read trashy novels, magazines, anything without longlasting value.

I'm a Christian, raised radical religious right, but I don't fit in there anymore (thank you, MDC! ), so we're trying to find another church that fits us.

I love a good glass of red wine. Yum.

We have so much school loan debt between the two of us that the mortgage brokers were convinced we already HAD a mortgage.

I adore music festivals in the summer time. We listen to bluegrass and folk, and my dh (who is a total dead-head) has even gotten me to love Jerry.

I dress conservatively (think the Gap), except at those music festivals, and you'd never know that "Not Just for Kids" plays continuously at my house.

I have a thing for Vera Bradley and monograms. It's that inner sorority girl.

I love to sew, but I never get enough time for it.

I also love to cook, and I make time for that.

I'm asleep by 10 pm every night since about the 9th grade (before that, my bedtime was earlier )

I love, love, love being a mama and wish I had done it years earlier.

If you really knew me, you'd know that...

- I am hopelessly addicted to MDC! And I have become a compulsive email/thread watcher!

- I am also hopelessly addicted to cloth diapers.

- I miss the spontaneity and wanderings of pre-baby life.

- I have "commuted" between Montana/Alaska/South America for years now.

- We dream of raising our child/children outside of the United States (in Argentina)

- My spanish gets much better after a glass of wine!

- I admire my DH more than anyone else on earth (my grandmother runs a close second) for his patience and kindness.

- We dont have TV but our Netflix queue is filled with episodes of 24.

- Motherhood is so much harder than I ever thought it would be.

- I absolutely love the selflessness involved with being a mother.
