As long as we're on the topic--vasectomy or tubal?

Has anyone else researched this? I was going to ask our family practitioner (I don't have an OB/GYN yet) but thought I should research it a bit, first.

I absolutely don't want to birth more babies at all. I'm so terrified of getting pg that, well, let's just say it's been a long while since we've DTD. Both of my girls were conceived while we were "using condoms" and I just don't even want to mess around with anything else at all. I am very firm in my conviction that it's either DP or me who needs to do something permanent about it.

And yes, he and I have to discuss it further, but I'm just curious as to what you've all found out for yourselves on this topic.

Well, the surgery is much easier on the men. A tubal is a much bigger surgery - plus - if you ever do change your mind in the future - a vasectomy is easier to reverse than a tubal. I also believe - someone correct me if I'm wrong - that having a tubal is pretty effective at preventing pgs, but when people do have oops pgs, they tend to be ectopic. I remember reading that somewhere, but I may be wrong. Gotta go - Louis is awake!

Had a tubal 4 years ago.

Had a baby 11 days ago.

Nature will find a way

I was happy with our decision, but now....now that we have one, I am wondering if there is a chance we can get pg again. Plus like a PP stated, the risk of ectopic pg is up there.

I say, follow your heart. If you want it to be your last... do the surgery be on the pill, use condomes and ABSTAIN

I say vasectomy all the way! You've done enough! It's his turn for a few days of minor discomfort after a minor procedure (although if you find a way to convince your husband, maybe you could talk to mine in 10 years!!).

My hubby has his consultation with the urologist (the friendly urologist! my new best friend!!) later this month.

We can not wait to get this done -- we have been dtd more than ever (I guess all these kids really united us and I am TERRIFIED of getting pg.

I would ask dh to have a vas, but there is something new out there called essure for women. It's an in-office procedure with supposedly no recovery time. Here's a link: http://www.essure.com/

omg, you are so funny!

i agree w/ what everyone else has said about vas being minimally invasive & nice for the man to take some responsibility.

but just want to throw out there... isn't there a new non-surgical technique for tubal ligation that's also minimally invasive? anyone know anything about this? http://www.essure.com/

My dh and I agreed long before we ever had kids that when we were done it would be his responsibility to get a vas. I had to take the pill for years every day and carry and give birth to the kids, so the least he could do is go for "the snip". He was a bit nervous but got to take 4days off work during the busy season (early Dec in a retail giant). He was really nervous during our consultation and I guess he almost broke down after I left the room and the dr was about to start. But the dr was really great and calmed him down and did the procedure. Dh was sore and did stay solidly on the couch for his 4day weekend. The first few days back to work he brought meds along and sat with his ice in his lap as soon as he got home. Within a week he was barely sore and now just over a month later he's not even thinking about it anymore. Now we just have to wait for his samples to come back clear. We haven't dtd yet (I know pathetic) but I was on the pill when I got pg and we hate condoms and the few times we've tried the baby has woken up and I just flip right back into mommy mode immediately. So anyway, it wasn't all that bad for him and now he even tells other guys at work that it wasn't nearly as hard as he had psyched himself up for.

Wow, thanks for posting that. DH refuses to even think about the big V. Of course we think we want more kids now, but the essure looks like a great option.

My husband is completely horrified...won't even discuss it, not even for when he's older. I'll probably be pregnant when I'm 50. :

My dh has always said that when it is time to do something "permanent" in the bc department, he will get the snip. He said it was only fair after I was pregnant, and birthed his children, he could do a little outpatient procedure that is much safer and less invasive than TL. As it is, we aren't 100% sure we won't have one more, so I have an IUD until we decide.
