Red Star Nutrional Yeast

Anyone use this? If so, what do you put it on and is it really as great as I've heard it is? I tend to be skeptic of things because of so many supposedly healthy things containing not-so-healthy elements, but this seems legit - am I right in assuming that?

I haven't tried it but vegetarians tend to use it on things to give it a cheesy sort of flavour so I guess you could try subbing some cheese recipies with it or mix it through polenta or mashed potato. It has a cheesy buttery taste (or so I've read, I want to try it too!)

I love it on popcorn!! There is a great website called www.vegweb.com/ that has many recipes, I tried the uncheese recipe and love it with tortilla chips. Very healthy for you. My husband thinks that the recipes are too healthy tasting...so I eat it alone.

I lurve it!! As a pp said, it has a cheesy flavor to it, so add it to anything that you would sprinkle some cheese on. I mix it in with my pot pies, use it to make green bean casserole, and sprinkle it on several different rice and veggie type dishes. I also use it to make vegan mac & cheese. Super yummy and good for you.

Ok, here's a question, why's it so good? What are the benefits of eating it?

Is Red Star some special kind of nutritional yeast, or do you just mean Nut. yeast in general??

Good b/c it provides vitamin B12, which most vegan diets are lacking. It also tastes darn good! I'm not vegan, get plenty of B12 from eggs, and eat Nutritional yeast several times a week. Make sauces, gravies, add to pasta, etc. It's addictive, really!

FWIW - this question is better posted in the Nutrition and Good Eating Forum, more specifically the vegan & vegetarian boards

Red Star us the tastiest. I also use it to make veggie gravy. I brown it a bit with some flour and make a roux and then add stock. We love it on popcorn too. Several times a week!

I love it sprinkled on buttered toast.

That's my mommy brain for you. I swear I searched the boards here for like 15 minutes trying to find a food forum and couldn't find one. I definitely blame it on my lack of sleep considering I just found it and was like, "Oh...duh!"

As for the nutritional yeast, I have another mom on another board saying that for B12 Kombucha is better - but I've looked up the supposed taste of it and don't think I could stomach it. I'll stick with trying the nutritional yeast I think.

I think sea veggies are a good way to get B12, too, but in one of my cookbooks, it says it stil hasn't been verified yet, but they're really good for you anyway, so no harm in eating them We have all the different kinds of seaweed, and use them very randomly (not very often, unfortunatly). But, I'm trying to like them!

Many HFS sell little bottles of kombucha if you'd like to sample to get an idea...you could even flavor it with ginger or organic juice if you are so inclined....it's actually quite yummy!

I would maybe try it with some organic juice. something I read said it was like a mix of sparkling apple cider and champagne. I like apple cider, and I like *some* champagne. I guess I just have a huge gag reflex so I'm always really careful about new things I try. What is the smallest size you've seen kombucha sold in? I don't want to buy a ton and then not like it, know what I mean?

Oh I know what you mean!

You should be able to find about 16 oz for about $3.00. Most likely you will have a choice of plain or flavored. ETA: It will probably be found in the fridge section

I had my first try at a farmer's market (blueberry flavored, super yum) and was spending a little too much before I realized I could make my own super cheap. That being said, I still haven't completed my first batch yet but it is already tasting yummy. Still a little sweet.

I'd say that is an accurate description of the taste. Just have a nice glass of water handy in case your gag reflex kicks in!

I haven't tried Red Star brand, but I love the nutritional yeast sold in bulk at my co-op! One of my favorite main dishes is pasta and steamed veggies topped with nutritional yeast, topped with olive oil with onions and herbs sauteed in it, topped with sunflower seeds.
