some questions about the cord

I gave my mw my 2 operative reports yesterday and she was reading through them. DS was born by c/s after 33 hours of pitocin-induced labor and AROM. He never descended, he was at -3 when I had the c/s. The cord was wrapped tightly once around his neck and he was OP. When reading my operative report I didnt pay much attention to the nuchal cord- lots of babies have that. I figured it was the OP and the fact that I was on my back etc, the whole hospital/OB scene. But my mw said that since his cord was wrapped tightly, he probably couldnt descend.

Now I am a bit freaked. DD also had the cord wrapped around her neck according to her operative report (though not tightly). Is this something that all my babies do and its going to be a problem? My mw said as a hb mw if they felt thats what was happening they would give it some time and let the cord stretch.

I mean, tons of babies have their cords around their neck and they come out, so... I dont know.

Thoughts?

IIRC the stat is 25% of babies have a nuchal cord. Most can be born vaginally without a problem. If the cord is truly too short for baby to descend, the mw is trained to recognize the signs and will suggest transfer.

Also, it isn't true that your future babies will likely have a nuchal cord. It is simply a matter of how they happen to move in utero, there is no way you can predispose your kids to have a nuchal cord. The fact that both of your babies had a nuhcal cord is simply due them being pretty common...

Lack of amniotic fluid makes changes in baby's position much, much harder. I wouldn't panic.

thanks ladies... the fact that 25% have a nuchal cord and my mw has a transfer rate of like 2% means something ends up working out...

I'll try not to worry about it.
