Maternity clothes

Thread Starter
My clothes are starting to get tight...and I am only 5weeks. I think I might have to bring out my maternity clothes pretty soon.

When did you start wearing maternity clothes? When did you start to show with your second or third baby?

Where did you buy your maternity clothes?

I'm showing later this time, actually, than I did with Skye. With her I was huge by 8 weeks and definitely showing by 7 (which I think I am, now.)
Right now I have two pairs of trousers I can fasten and two pairs of "who are you trying to kid?" And two pairs on order There's no definite bump, though, I'm just thicker round the middle.

I'm not showing at all but I feel huge (I'm 6.5 weeks). All my pants feel uncomfortable except my PJ pants. Too bad I can't wear those to work.

I lost a lot of weight breastfeeding DS, so I've got pants in several different sizes. I've already moved up a size, my smallest were getting too tight! I didn't need maternity pants until 6 months last time, but I'm guessing I'll need them sooner this time!

There was a thread about this recently.

I'm already busting out of my clothes at 7 weeks with my 3rd. I just bought 2 new pairs of maternity pants, and I have stuff from SIL (I was bigger with my previous kids--I'm a S/M now). I'm currently trying to wear a new pair of jeans in a size bigger than what I normally wear (a 12 instead of 10). The new maternity pants have a narrow, not obvious stretchy part, so if you wore a longer top, they wouldn't look maternity.

I started wearing maternity pants sooner than shirts, just because it got so uncomfortable, so I think it is fine to get them now and wear what is comfortable. I LOVE euphoriamaternity.com and they have sales periodically.

I felt like I showed early with my first pg. I started wearing maternity clothes around 8 weeks. I didn't the second time until 16 weeks. This time I don't think my clothes have changed yet but I'm just 5 weeks. I did go to Motherhood today to look around and ended up buying a pair of panel-less blue jeans and a pair of khaki's with just a small band at the waist. They could fit me in a few weeks I'm sure because they aren't very big. I also got 2 maternity shirts (short sleeved) that are things I can wear to church or when I start showing. Thankfully they are slim enough that I could wear them now and they wouldn't make me look like I'm wearing a tent. Maternity clothes have come a LONG way in the last 8 years when I was pg with my first! So much cuter stuff now!

I am preggers with #5 and I just noticed tonight my waist fills fuller. Even my PJ's feel a snugger in the waist already and I think I am 4 weeks or so. Will find out Feb. 7th how far along I am exactly. :

I didn't start to wear maternity clothes until almost 12 weeks with number one. Now... I am almost 7 weeks and I have already gained 8 or 9 pounds! I am very happy about the weight gain because I lost a lot of weight breastfeeding. I bought some super cute summer maternity clothes on oldnavy.com and some really great prices! I was pregnant mostly in the winter with ds so I could resist buying some summer clothes.

This is my second, and I guess I neve stoped wearing maternity clothes My favorite pants are my pair of Seven Maternity jeans and my maternity khakis from Gap with the big stretch roll down panel for the tummy, it's like a fantastic leg warmer for your tummy!

We don't plan to tell anyone for awhile and this will make things easier, no one ever wonders why I am wearing maternity clothes, they know 'I'm just like that'!

I'm not showing in the morning (well, there's a little roll there, but I'm blaming that on holiday overeating but by the end of the day, I'm huge. Thank goodness for yoga pants. I'm happy I've got a day job or the cat would be out of the bag already!

We're waiting to tell family because I'll see them all together in Feb (we all live apart). But, there is one set in town we'll see a couple times before then, and the thing is...I bought all my maternity clothes from her because she's also petite and had her pants all professionally hemmed! So, I bought a couple pairs of maternity pants so if I bump into her at the mall (it happens) and for when she's over I don't give myself away too easily. But, I'm also nervous that she'll notice that they're mat, even though they're the early ones. I might try and wear some regular bigger-size jeans when I see her at a party next weekend!

While we're on the topic of maternity clothes, anyone have any tips for asking for handme downs from friends?? There is a handful of new moms at my church who I know have been great resources to each otehr throughout pregnancy and new motherhood and I just don't relly know how to break into the circle. Our money situation is really tight right now (I quit my job to go back to school, then DH got laid off unexpectedly).

Or do any of you have good thrifty tips for finding maternity clothes? I'm a very thrifty shopper but a lot of what I come across for maternity stuff is really outdated. Tips are appreciated!!

Sarah, do you have any consignment shops nearby? Or an online 'for sale' thing? Or a free local pennysaver or some such? I'm surprised your church community hasn't made an offer to include you and I'm honestly unsure how you would bring it up tactfully; I'm not very good at those things.

Hmm... could you put up a notice at your church asking if anyone has any used maternity clothes for sale? Perhaps once they realize you're looking they'll even offer to lend or give them to you.

I'm only 4 wks, 3 days, so don't need them yet, but I am so sad because after my last one (born one year ago) I got rid of all of my maternity clothes! And I hate the way the new ones fit, with that low rise! I had a pair of maternity jeans with the panel that were so comfy, I just loved them! :

I can't really remember too well with DS, but I think I wore my regular jeans until about 12 weeks, but had to unbutton them and use a (loose) belt to keep them closed. Then, when the belt became uncomfortable, I used a hairtie wrapped through the loop and around the button. I was determined not to buy maternity clothes until I absolutely had to. I still fit in my jeans like that at 12 weeks, but it was getting uncomfortable because the baby was up higher at that point. I wore a lot of regular stretchy-waist stuff during the summer, and then bought 2 pairs of jeans when it got colder, when I was about 6 months along.

I'll probably do the same thing this time around. I hate maternity clothes. They are sooo uncomfortable for me!

I think it's a good idea to go ahead and just buy maternity clothes as soon as you can comfortably wear them. If you're going to have to buy them anyway, you may as well get as much use as possible out of them, rather than being uncomfortable in growing-tighter non-maternity clothes (especially pants). And the new low waistband pants are very comfortable, and don't "look" maternity. Maternity pants even have pockets these days!

The truth is, I have a couple of maternity skirts I have NEVER stopped wearing!!! But for tops I definitely wait for mid-2nd tri because those are mostly WAY obvious... like suddenly you look like a tent and people kind of wonder why.

My best-kept secret (shhh) for maternity clothes is Value Village (or any local thrift shop). They are secondhand BUT most mamas only wear them through one pregnancy so most are nearly new, current styles, super-cheap, already broken-in and oh-so-comfy.

Because I shop 2ndhand, I start buying mat stuff as soon as I find out I'm pg... you never know when you'll find another wonderful (whatever-it-is) so I just buy it when I see it in the store. I have a lovely shirt/sweater set I bought in my last pregnancy that I am SO hoping to wear this time around...
