Any good resource for clients with, um, personal questions? - Page 3

One thought--where do you refer your clients who just need general therapy/counselling? What sort of mental health serviced *are* available in your area? I wonder what sort of reception you would get if you contacted them and said, "Look, I'm seeing the need for some sort of sex therapy for some of my clients--I've been getting questions from clients with issues like X, Y, and Z, and I'm at a loss of how to really help them." I wonder if there is anyone in the area that has been THINKING about doing some sort of sex therapy, but hasn't because they didn't know there is a need? Or maybe (depending upon how conservative the area is) it *is* available, but you need to know the right person to ask?

What sort of referrals to the mental health counselors in your area make, in terms of information regarding sexual health? Maybe they would have some ideas for you (if, of course, you haven't already checked these resources out).

I'm glad you started this thread. I, too, understand the physiological ins and outs of problems women can experience with their bodies--but I think that we don't learn enough about the psychological issues and how to deal with them. I'm lucky enoug to live in an area where there are a lot of resources...for those with money and energy, that is.

As always, you are awesome. I wish you lived near me, I'd hang out in your office every dang day until you hired me to be your office nurse.

unconventional but of some use is Love Line- it is a radio program that offers advice and info on sex and drug use/addiction--- they have "heard it all" and connect the dots pretty quickly because it is entertainment it isn't always gentile -- There is also an older woman who has a Q&A show on cable she is in Canada and is pretty informative as well-- I think both of these sources are for a gen x or later crowd----- although my mom could probably get something out of the Canadian lady and not be offended---
thanks for the book references

Thanks for the book recommendations. My credit card gives us Border's certificates (like airline miles ones' do, but we prefer books!) We just paid oldest ds's college tuition on it so I'm expecting a bunch of certificates soon and need to go order some books for my office.

As for mental health/sex therapy in my area, there isn't much available. In my town, there is just the local community mental health center which is so backed up they can't even get suicidal folks in for weeks, let alone folks with non-urgent/life-threatending conditions. There is one psychiatrist in town - he covers our community mental health center, and the one's in 2 neighboring towns, and he's not what I'd call interested in any kind of lifestyle issues.

There is sex therapy available in the Chicago and suburbs area, but that's a 1 1/2 -2 hour drive. Also, most of my clients are working poor and covered only by medicaid or have insurance that barely covers medical care, let alone mental health. One of my goals is to at least put together a list of resources for folks - including places to refer to so that I have something coherent to hand to people.

Rereading my earlier posts, I was kind of snippy - sorry about that! One really doesn't learn a thing about true sex therapy type of issues in med school or residency.

The Canadian lady is Sue Johanson. She is awesome. She used to have a televised call in show on called "Sex with Sue" and then it was a radio show, "Sunday Night Sex Show" (or the titles were reversed... can't remember for sure). DH and I loved her! I haven't thought of her in a few years. She is the most open, honest and tell-it-like-it-is woman. Here is her latest website (just googled it).

mwherbs - thanks for the memories!
