Making mattress for youth bed for DD

Thread Starter
I inherited a youthbed that is over 100 years old. has been used by most people in my family - including me. I have had it stripped of lead paint and all those safty things, but I need a special mattress size.

DD will still co-sleep - this is just for her naps.

My mother just made one out of that horrible foam stuff when I was a kid - I don't really want to do that, but I feel that maybe just cotton would be too soft, not safe? I don't have the $300 to spend on a custom organic mattress.

Ideas?

Maybe try IKEA? I know they have mattresses made of latex, wool, and cotton - perhaps they have a youth size.

Here's a link for making a foam one, if you decide you're interested in going that route:

I've also seen directions on making cotton futons from old sheets; try doing a google search. Futons are decidedly NOT too soft!
