Regarding "strict overseas adoption standards"

This issue isn't over yet apparently.

Wow, is that the actual name of the segment? I'm not sure I can stand to watch it!

I've got it on now but it's talking about something else. I wonder if I already missed it. I wanted to see if they took a better angle. But I didn't see the last one.

Well I'm glad I didn't waste an hour waiting for that to come on. They basically touched on the fact that China wasn't going to allow children to be adopted to: overweight, on an antidepressant, making <80 grand, and single people after the new rules go into effect. It is sad that they are making these rules now. We certainly don't make 80g, are slightly overweight, and have been on antidepressant's in the past (multiple miscarriages). Sad that they can cut out so many people from the joy of adopting.

As far as I've heard, you don't need to make $80k, just have a net worth of $80k. As far as the overweight part, being slightly overweight won't disqualify you - a BMI of over 40 will. I'm fat, but my BMI is way less than 40.

I am a little sad because we probably won't qualify anymore, either.

Well I figured they wouldn't stick their feet in their mouth again. It sounds like it was just a teaser.

Are there really as few kids available for adoption in China as they are now saying? I thought China had overcrowded orphanages and that most of the orphans would never see homes? No?

I missed the show but sounds like it wasn't as controversial, so that is good.

Mamanicki, I don't know if there is any way to really know what is going on in China, I have heard that the number of dossiers is about double that of paper-ready children, and there are various reasons for this incl. the fact that the CCAA offices are moving, more domestic adoptions, fewer abandonments, etc. The wait for referral is at about 16 months. OTOH, I recently read the account of a dad just returning saying there are still many, many children in the orphanage he visited. All we can really do is speculate.

I would love to know the number of children who are in orphanages who are considered to be unadoptable due to age?

I too have wondered about the real truth in China. There is a website research-china.org. I don't argee with everything he says and he does have a rather hypocritical agenda in that after 3 Chinese adoptions he believes that international adoption should be forsaken for only domestic adoptions. That being said, he does seem to research his topics well on the reasons for the slow down in China.
