Sewing wool?

I'm still baffled how everyone is sewing wool.

If your sewing on your machines, what kind of machine do you have?

I took my machine in and he said to sew wool, I needed a commercial machine. Does everyone who sews wool here have a commercial machine?

Someone suggested a walking foot...what's that?

I have a few wool sweaters and I've ruined a few others, 'cuz the wool is "too thick".

Please help, I totally infatuated with wool right now and I want to sew the heck out of some recycled sweaters.

Thanks!!!!!!!

A walking foot is a sewing machine foot that attatches and basically replicates the motion of the feed dogs on the top layer of your fabric, so the top and bottom feed evenly. It makes sewing a lot of things easier, and yes, I use mine for sewing wool. I also decrease the force of the presser foot when I am working with thick materials (my machine has a dial for this, others have a push button type thingy or a screw, check your manual.)

You can totally sew wool on a home sewing machine, the idea that you need a commercial machine is a bunch of crap. I agree with the pp, decreasing the presser foot pressure will help. Depending on your machine, it might help to have a walking foot. I don't use one but I know lots of mamas do. And you might want to look at lighter weight sweaters if what you've been working with are the bigger, bulkier sweaters like for skiing.

What kind of machine do you have?

It's a White- Jeans Machine 25 yrs old

The last sweater was thinner, but the bobbin keeps tangling on the underside, and i just had it tuned up.

Does it sew something like a cotton woven ok? Maybe try tugging gently on the thread tails when you begin a seam, to give the feed dogs a little help.

I sew more wool ( recycled longies than anything else on my 30 year old singer. I do use a walker foot but not all the time, only if I am sewing lots of layers or REALLLLLY wooly wool but that is crap that you can't do it. If you don't have a walker foot keep the presser foot up but make sure that you are feding it at a good rate to keep the bobbin and thread in sync is the best way to describe it. When my PF is up I get more problems with my bobbins threads than when it is down. Just play around and make it work. Good luck.

I use the little quote box in the lower left hand corner of the original message, and then I cut out all the extra text that I don't need.

I've sewn tons of wool in my sewing machines. It takes the smaes settings of any other heavy knit fabric, and it makes lint like crazy!
