Dyeng Prefolds

Has anyone dyed their prefolds? I am thinking about dyeing some of my prefolds with regular Rit dye that I can buy at the grocery store.

Has anybody tried this? Does it work? Could the dye cause any skin problems in my baby?

I would love to hear your experiences!

I've dyed tons of prefolds, and personally I wouldn't use the Rit. For beginners, I suggest you get this kit. It's not harmful to the baby's skin and the colors come out way better and stay longer. Good luck!

I used rainbow rock dyes which have held up fine. You can get them at Michael's, and many other various craft stores.

Dyeing is lots of fun, although even *trying* to pay attention I always end up with dyed hands for a week.

I agree that you'll get much better results with dyes other than RIT, such as Procion fiber-reactive dyes. I order mine from Dharma Trading, but they're also available at A.C. Moore, if you have one near you. In addition to the dye itself, you'll also need some soda ash (sodium carbonate); everything else is optional.

the procion dyes are really easy to use, and they give BEAUTIFUL colors, too!

I used the Procion dyes from Dharma trading company and they have held up really well after hundreds of hot washes. I used all the chemicals they recommend in their directions. The soda ash is really important for making the dye stay in place.

Yay! Thanks for the input. I will avoid the Rit dye and pick up one of the ones you suggested. Now the hard part will be deciding which colors to use, lol.
