Home Air Purifiers- need reccommendations

I really need to get one for my gm. She has terrible coughing fits that seem to be related to dust and to seasonal irritants. I know they are expensive but I need a good one.
I also have a list of features I'd prefer

* no replacement filters, she can't afford to buy them
* easy to care for
* quiet (gp might get irritated if its noisy, he is the typical grumpy old man who doesn't like his routine upset)

TIA

I saw an air purifier with the features you mention in the Shaper Image Catalog. Maybe it is good.

I have two Austin Air Purifiers. They don't really fit your specs, though. They aren't what I'd call quiet. It isn't really a roar, but it is certainly noticeable. They need replacement filters. The only reason I could afford it is thanks to a FEMA grant given to NYC residents after 9-11. They reimbursed for new air conditioners (which may have been clogged with dust/debris from the WTC), air purifiers, replacement filters, and HEPA vacuum cleaners. The filters only need to be changed every five years, though. I got mine soon after dd was born, so I won't need to replace the filter 'til she's 5. It is hard to tell how well an air purifier is working. The only noticeable thing is the absence of smell emanating from our cats' litter box.

The Ionic Breeze form the Sharper Image catalog. I want one of these soooo bad, I would drool everytime I saw the commercial. They are pricey but seem well worth it and Sharper Image has a great reputation and satisfaction gurantees as well. No filters, just pull the thing out, wipe with damp cloth, dry it off then slide it back in. SImple.

I want one too..my allergies are terrible. Is it supposed to help?

Here is a link to the ionic breeze at ther sharper image online store, there are links to info on there such as how it works, what it does, etc..:

I told DH I want one of these a while ago, he aggrees so we are going to get one soon.

I did do a search and I noticed there are other air purifiers based upon the ionic breeze, i didn't check them out though but maybe they are less expensive and work the same? You might want to try a search and see what else is out there.

Ionic Breeze is the Best!!

My mother bought us an Ionic Breeze for Christmas, it was expensive, but she has 2 so she knew it was worth it. It is amazing. Our bedroom is upstairs and the windows don't open so it gets stuffy. It's amazing how well it works, it's silent, easy to clean and my husband's allergies are almost non-existent now. If you go to the Sharper Image auctions then you can usually buy one that's reconditioned - that's how my mom got hers and they've lasted for years. They are about half the price that way.

I've never used one, and I don't know how these compare to the ones in Sharper Image, but I saw something like the Ionic Breeze at Radio Shack. I imagine that they are probably cheaper there, but I don't know.

We have a house full of Ionic Breeze air cleaners. One dd is asthmatic and highly allergic, and we have (unfortunately) forced hot air heating. Anyway, they are well worth the money. We had HEPA air cleaners before, and the IB wins hands down. The difference is amazing (you really only notice it at first, then clean becomes "normal") and I can't begin to tell you about the hideous stuff that comes off the bars when you clean them -- furry, black, and even smelly! I can't believe we breathe this stuff! And I always considered our house to be pretty clean... The Sharper Image has been running a "Buy 1, Get One 1/2 Price" sale on all three models for quite some time. You also get a "free" bathroom sized plug-in unit with a night light , and the last catalog I received mentioned free shipping. If you can manage it, don't hesitate. (And no, I don't work for them)

We tried the Ionic Breeze...returned it...it didn't seem to help here at all!!!
There is a GREAT one called the Air Source...you do not have to clean it. It uses a special kind of bulb.
I'm not quite sure where you would find it...i will post back here tomorrow.
I know that when they were testing it they built a "simulation" house with rooms and put different things like dust and even bacterias and molds...within a certain amount of time like over 99% of it all was gone!
This is the one I want REALLY BAD!!!
But it too is expensive. Someday I will own one!
You can even use it to get all of the dust and dust mites out of your beds and furniture!!!
A friend of mine that has one spilled a bottle of HFK willow/garlic drops in her bedroom. She put the airsource in there and when she came back later that day, couldn't smell a thing!!!
