Pablo Neruda

Thread Starter
I have just recently discovered the poetry of Pablo Neruda..
Beautiful, Intimate, Inspiring
Anyone else a fan?

Love Sonnet XVII
by Pablo Neruda

I don't love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that doesn't bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don't know any other way of loving

but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.

Love Sonnet XI
by Pablo Neruda

I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair.
Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets.
Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day
I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps.

I hunger for your sleek laugh,
your hands the color of a savage harvest,
hunger for the pale stones of your fingernails,
I want to eat your skin like a whole almond.

I want to eat the sunbeam flaring in your lovely body,
the sovereign nose of your arrogant face,
I want to eat the fleeting shade of your lashes,

And I pace around hungry, sniffing the twilight,
hunting for you, for your hot heart,
like a puma in the barrens of Quitratue.

I love his work

My favorite book of him is "Confieso que he vivido"

In fact, a collection of his poetry made my must-keep list in my recent strict book decluttering. You know, the kind where if I had to keep only 10 books, his poetry would be one of them. I melt sometimes when I read them. Replenishing.

HUGE fan!

You should check out a book he did with a family friend, Milton Rogovin. Windows that Open Inward: Images of Chile. Pablo did the poetry and Milton the photographs.

Oh, how nice to read Love Sonnet XVII again! It was one of the readings in our wedding ceremony 10 years ago. My best guy friend was the reader.

It is soooo beautiful!

I've been trying to work on my Spanish to bring it up to speed so that I can read the stuff in the original.

Absolutely LOVE Neruda!! Have you listened to the soundtrack of Il Postino which has celebrities reciting his poetry to the strains of the original soundtrack? I like the translations by W.S. Merwin the best.

My favorites are:

Tonight I Can Write [the saddest lines...] especially the part about how his "voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing" and "love is so short, forgetting so long."

Poetry "And it was at that age... Poetry arrived in search of me..."

This book looks interesting for children: To Go Singing Through the World: The Childhood of Pablo Neruda by Deborah Kogan Ray. It's on my wish list!

You might also enjoy the works of Federico GarcĂa Lorca.
