From A Baby Story this morning:

Quote:
With my first, I had a natural childbirth. With an epidural, of course.

Isn't it odd that so many people think "natural childbirth" simply means a vaginal birth? Weird, huh? :

: ...and :

It's the old "natural" = vaginal issue again! There's nothing natural about being strapped down with drugs... SIGH.

I watched one this am, but it was only because she had a precipitous labor . It was actually a very comical episode.

I just saw the first couple of minutes, to see if it would be a good one or not. I saw it was going to be one of THOSE episodes, so I turned the TV off...

I really prefer House of Babies on the Discovery Health channel.

i have heard good things and have been wishing i had that channel lately - especially being home all day!

Ooh, Kim, I think that's the best thing to do, espcially while pregnant!

It's just so frustrating to see yet another show reinforce the idea that vaginal is natural. Or that birth can't happen without interventions!

I saw that one too this morning and just cursed at the TV and turned it off!!! What really cheesed me was how flippant she equated the epidural to natural.

The show before that one with the mother birthing her third baby was fairly good (for that show) because she didn't have an epi or IV, however she was on her back in bed with an EFM. I like how the MW in that one was "educating the audience" about how a womans body just knows how to birth a baby. Like DUH....YA THINK!!!

But I suppose there is a significant portion that doesn't understand the basics...very sad

Do you ever watch those shows and add your own coaching?

"Turn over, Turn OVER!" "Stand up and get that baby out!"
yes, not only do I do coaching I usually scream at the TV- but I do have fantasies that there is the midwife squad show and in the middle of the craziness- there is a stop action scene and a midwife alternative offered- like ok now what are the alternatives here. Someone make my version of these shows please.

my husband laughs at me when i watch shows or movies where people are giving birth. i basicly talk to the doctor the whole time: "you idiot!"

of course, i'm watching fictional stuff. i couldn't possibly know what the doctor is thinking or special knowledge s/he may have on a nonfiction show.

i'm just saying that in fictional cases where nothing is presented as abnormal, the 'tv doc' suggests all sorts of crazy things that don't make sense.

Oh my, that's hysterical!

Midwife 911?
Midwife Eye for the OB Lie?
Extreme Makeover: Birth Edition?

zoebird I was cursing out an ER birth the other night and DH got very annoyed with me.

--------
I saw a bunch of the episodes that aired yesterday morning and was getting SO frustrated. Even the one with the doula and midwife rubbed me the wrong way. I had to stop watching those shows too because I am constantly yelling at the TV and wanting to strangle the doctors.

Too funny!

I try very hard not to watch these. I'm always yelling "you are not a dead bug, get up get up"

It sucks big that many women feel vaginal =natural. Yuck.

about the new show names!

I really think that many women say natural instead of vaginal just because they don't like saying "vaginal"
