Potatoes, Not Prozac

Anyone read this book?

I was reading up on this the other day. Here's the website with her 7 steps. http://www.radiantrecovery.com/index.html

I've had a lot of problems with depression on and off over the years. This past summer I read about The Mood Cure on MDC and it was a lifesaver for me. After starting the supplements I really felt alot better and after a few months on them, I felt good enough to have the energy (mental) to start cleaning up my diet (to what I consider a healthy one - I know people have different opinions on that but I don't want to debate it ). Then on December 1st I cut sugar out of my diet (with the help of the Sugar Free Tribe in Health and Healing) and now I'm just feeling better than ever!

So that brings me to Potatoes, Not Prozac. Since I've already cut out sugar, her ideas line up with mine and I was interested. I haven't read the book but I've heard a lot online and read a lot of info on the website.

I'm feeling great and my diet is really good right now but I'm always looking for more ideas on how to *stay* good. I'm off almost all of the Mood Cure supplements and doing most of it with diet now (whoo hoo!) but there's still a few I'm taking and I'd like to someday be off them too. Not that I think they are bad or anything, but I agree with the author that it's ideal to do as much as you can with diet and lifestyle, not supplements (and of course there's the $$$!).

So anyway, a few days ago I yet again come across this website and decide to try her potato thing. The potato, eaten 3 hours after dinner (before bedtime) is supposed to help raise your serotonin levels. That helps you get a better night's sleep and helps you be in a better mood.

So the last two days I've eaten a small, red potato, hours after dinner (with the skin and without protein as she says). Both times I had a lot more dreams than usual and woke up really groggy. Yesterday I just went back to bed and slept another hour but today Robert was out when Owen woke me so I had to get up (grumble, grumble). I'm vaguely headachy now but most of the grogginess is gone.

I know she says on the website that if this happens (she mentions both the dreams and the grogginess) that you have to adjust how much potato you have. I'm wondering though if maybe this is because I'm already on supplements and eating well I just don't need more serotonin?

It's something I might play with on the weekends when the hubby is here to be with Owen but I'm not willing to wake up this groggy during the week so I'm not going to try it tonight.

Just wondering if there's anyone else on here who's tried this.

I don't know much about PNP, but I am familiar with TMC supplements. If you are on one of the serotonin precursorts 5-HTP or l-Tryptophan, and then are raising serotonin through foods, you could be having "serotonin syndrome"--basically, too much serotonin. If you aren't on those supplements, I am not sure....

Kaydee, do you have a copy of the book? I loaned mine out so I can't refer to it right now. I used to be on 5-HTP but am not any longer. I'm down to just L-Tyrosine in the morning and GABA in the evening (and standard stuff like C, B, E, selenium and magnesium). I know the L-Tyrosine doesn't have anything to do with seratonin but does GABA?
