5 year old with constipation

I am wondering if anyone has any advice for helping cure constipation in children. My daughter is 5 and she has had constipation for a couple of months now, sometimes very bad and sometimes just harder stool. She eats pretty good, for a 5 year old. Any suggestions of foods I could try that would help with this, things I could mix in to food, herbal remedies? I prefer natural remedies. I don't want to give laxatives if possible. Thanks!!!

Dairy is very constipating, so I would minimize that. Is she drinking enough fluids? Does she eat whole grain bread? She is old enough to understand that there is a correlation between when she eats and what her stools are like so make sure to tell her it's a good idea to eat fruits and veggies, just so she knows she has some control over it. If my ds eats something low in fiber, I try to make the next food a bit higher. So I might not offer a bowl of ice cream after a cheese sandwich. (If he asked for it, I would give him the ice cream but I'd remind him some apple slices would be a good idea to keep from getting constipating.)
