I'm watching this for my radio program that I'll be doing on Friday. The Localvore movement is big in Vermont, and one participant wanted to do a review of all the relevant library materials.
The explanation of how they do genetic engineering was very interesting and has some parallels with vaccine manufacture (and some vaccines are genetically engineered). Just mixing up the genes won't do it. You've got to add in bits of e-coli and then they also use viruses and bacteria to get inside the cells. Sort of like the way adjuvants are used to boost vaccines, because just dropping a bit of attenuated virus has little effect.
All nifty, right? Then they get to the part where they need markers to see if it is all working right. What do they use? Antibiotic resistant stuff. Brilliant!
Other related matters are the revolving doors between various regulatory agencies and the big agricultural companies. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
Oh, and some of the pharma companies and agricultural companies are in the same conglomerates.
Sadly, they had a little section on how the medical gene researchers are very careful (unlike the agricultural researchers) and are developing good things like vaccines. Even the radicals won't stick their necks out and criticize vaccines.
