Getting DS out of bed to use the potty

This sounds weird, but DS does not leave the bed for any reason. He waits until I come get him. He'll just lay there, singing, talking, burrowing in his "nest", opening and shutting the shutters with his feet, playing with whatever toys he slept with the night before... for (possibly) hours. He's sat there for 60 minutes one time until I couldn't stand it anymore and got him. I'll knock on the wall to entice him to come out, open the door then leave and call him from my bedroom, leave his door open overnight... nothing works. He's perfectly happy waiting there for me. My friends tell me what a blessing it is since I never have to worry about him wandering the halls at night and for bedtime, he stays in bed until he falls asleep on his own (whether it takes 10 minutes or 2 hours). However, it's a PITA when it comes to nighttime diaper training.

He will wake up crying if he has to poop rather than walking himself to the potty. When he's constipated, he'll even poop in his diaper. Other than this problem of him not leaving his bed, he's totally PT'ed. I'll even forget to ask him if he needs to go during until I need to go and see that he's already used the potty or I see that he's washing his hands. We're still working on flushing. 80% of the mornings he wakes up dry -- if I get him within 15 minutes of his waking. Otherwise he'll just pee in his diaper. 98% of naps he wakes up dry unless he takes a 3+ hour nap.

Anyone have any tips to getting him to leave his bed to use the bathroom? I've got night lights everywhere, I coach him on where to go, got the bathroom set up, encourage him to do it.... I don't know what else to do. I started having him wear his underwear under his diaper so that if he does go, it'll feel wet but I just started that today so I don't know how that will go. He already told me that's not how to wear a diaper, no underwear please.

DH wants to me go cold turkey - no diaper. After a few nights of wet bed he should get it. HA! Guess who will be the one changing the bed sheets every day?! And it's not just the top sheet -- it's the whole darn bed with fleece blanket and down comforter! It's a major PITA to change DS's bed with the snugtuck pillow. No thanks. There's got to be a cleaner and easier way to do this. I just haven't figured out how yet.

I wish I had an answer for you.

My son doesn't wake up at all if he needs to go to the bathroom during the night.

I make him go just before bed and sometimes he stays dry sometimes he doesn't.
I figure it's not about the diaper, but more about internal cues waking him up.
His body will eventually wake him up if he needs to go during the night....right?

As far as your son waking up, but not getting up....that's a new one.
I wonder if he feels like he needs permission?

I'm not sure what to say either. DS has been dry at night for a few months now but at one point I did talk to him about if he wakes up and has to pee (he has always woken up when he pees at night - but up til then he'd just do it in his diaper) that he can either go to the bathroom himself or call me. I did this when he was staying dry like 95% of the time. He calls me. It's rare, though. I actually carry him to the bathroom, he goes and then he runs back to bed.

But that's me. Not sure if you're willing to do that. Otherwise I say just leave him diapered and he will do it eventually. He's still young.

You have just described my youngest two children to a T! BOTH of them are the same way - they don't leave their beds for any reason, they are happy to lay there and play. My son is almost nine, and he will get up to go to the bathroom, but he immediately returns to bed. My little girl is three and she will call me to take her to the bathroom, but absolutely won't get up herself. She's usually up around seven (she hears her big brother and sister getting ready for school) and will call me to take her to the potty, but she is always happy to go back to bed to sleep/play/sing until closer to eight. One other thing - I always have her go to the potty before she goes to bed (between seven and seven-thirty) and then I get her back up when I go to bed (usually between ten and eleven).
