We tried to hook the hose to the hot water heater, but the attachment is closer to where the cold water comes in than where the hot water comes out, so we moved it to the washing machine hot. We also had a hose to the faucet outside so we had cold, too. We got 1/4 turn valves & quick release attachments which made everything a breeze. We garden a lot so all the fancy little things are now put to use.
I definitely recommend a 'wet' run to see if you need anything else. We used ours several times before the birth for swimming in (we live in Alaska, so having the hot water made it bearable for swimming) and a week or so after the birth we had a family dip which was nice.
We had a big fishy pool ($17 from Toys R Us) on the deck and the little fishy pool (Birth with Sol) set up inside with a big tarp underneath. I used the big one for labor and the little one was supposed to be for birthing, but when the time came to push I couldn't imagine what position I would be comfortable in and ended up side-lying on the futon.
We also had a crock pot full of warm washcloths for my perineum.
Also a big ziploc in the freezer full of pads with witch hazel in them. That was great for the first 2 days or so.
Also have film/empty memory cards, charged batteries, etc ready to go
