It's interesting to note that the author links the demise of trained and licensed midwives and access to home birth to the rising infant an maternal mortality rates throughout Iraq:

Great article. Thanks for sharing. I think it's sad that the government refuses to re-license midwives even though it could save more lives.

What a sad story, but what an amazing woman/midwife. The bit at the end of the article about her personal story was really moving.

Thank you for posting that link. What a wonderful widwife and strong woman. How unfortunate for the women in Iraq that in addition to living in a warzone, they have restricted access to safe birth. The statistics are alarming, yet not surprising. The impact of the war reach far beyond a daily 'body count'. How very sad.
