Is this really how unschoolers do it? - Page 4

Well, , I have a feeling we're using a similar definition - but disagreeing on the ins and outs of it. See, I don't think of strewing as directing. I think of it as tossing in a possibility with the understanding that it might be utterly rejected. I see it as not that different from reading a notice about an upcoming opera and saying, "This sounds really good (blah blah) would you like to go?" Except that strewing requires no response at all, which some kids do appreciate. So I guess we just disagree... You're one of my favorite posters, and I absolutely love your blog - which is really something from someone who doesn't care for blogs - but alas...we disagree...

Oh dear - been packing for two days, it's after midnight, and my brain is fading out... - Lillian

I think so too. I also think exposing your child (if he's willing) to something he might like and get something out of is not the same as thinking of something you want him to know and setting out to manipulate him into learning it. It seems like you'd have to have a weird relationship with your child if he's going to feel all suspicious and manipulated simply because you thought it would be fun to visit a planetarium (where most people do go in hopes of learning something I would think) or left a book on the coffee table.

BTW, I distinctly remember this thread, it was when I was in the US visiting my family. I remember that I posted and later re-read the OP more carefully. I had skimmed it before and pretty much missed the way it was phrased. I saw it more as "opening up a door to astronomy--making it accessible" rather than "you want your kids to study astronomy" so that was totally my mistake for skimming and posting in a hurry and my other post on this thread may be disregarded.
