Tell me where I fit...

I am still learning the ropes and we don't seem to fit into a stereotypical mold. I understand the principals of unschooling and agree w/most but I still think there are some things (ahem, math) that need to be learned in a more traditional (for lack of a better term) manner. Dd's enrolled in some classes, mainly of her choosing. If I hadn't presented the opportunity, though, I doubt she would have asked to take them. She's enjoying them but technically it's not completely child-led learning. KWIM? I am not into the boxed curriculum and ready-made way courses. I am kind of in the middle. What am I? Is this eclectic? Is there a tribe for me?

I'd call you an eclectic. After over 15 years of homeschooling, that's what I call myself, too. I'm unschoolish in many respects, but I'm less unschoolish in the skill areas like math, learning how to read, and writing. I've just found that in my family, these skills are learned better if I'm leading. I'm happy with the balance we have, but it can change from day to day, month to month, and year to year, depending on the child (I have four). I'm open to shift gears according to the needs of my family, so sometime we're more of this, and less of that, but it works for us. So I'm of the eclectic tribe.

I'd agree that you sound pretty eclectic/relaxed.

Sounds eclectic to me- I think there are a lot of eclectics here- but we aren't as vocal as some of the other groups (and as an eclectic myself- we sometime sort of blend with the other groups depending on what seems to be working that week).

You're like me!!! I have the same feelings about math. Although I will admit to changing focus and really enjoying the new math approach that I am taking. (www.livingmath.net) You would probably be ecletic/relaxed. Take what works from differnt philosophies and make it work for you.
