I still have vivid memories of things my dad told me as a child...like learning to ride a bike as a 6-7 year old, I asked if we could ride on the road to go to the library, and he told me no because we would get hit by a car and the car would run over my legs and we would have to drive to the hospital with my legs in a cooler full of ice.

Heard similar explanations of what will happen if you stick your hand out the window when the car is moving .
But I tell you what, it certainly made an impression since I remember it 20 years later...though I have ridden my bike on the street many, many times. And my legs are still firmly attached.

I remember reading somewhere that this kind of language undermines your authority as an adult, because the child sees that the things you confidently say are going to happen, don't happen. And they come to disregard your legitimate concerns about what *may* happen.
