Looking for Non-traditional school in South FL

Anyone know of any alternative/non-traditional schools in South florida? Broward County preferably? I'm tearing my hair out trying to find something open and holistic for my son. Waldorf, Sudbury.. ANYTHING child-centered/open/free and natural. I've looked quite a bit and found a Waldorf school south of Miami but the commute would be beyond crazy for us. All the schools are so traditional here and coming from MN where there are sooo many alternatives- the lack of choice/variety is uttery depressing. I don't intend to be a downer, but I'm begining to think that maybe I'm looking for something that is simply not here. It's very hard for me to accept this.. I'm hoping that there may be someone out there who knows of a remote, grassroots little gem of a school that I just haven't stumbled upon yet!

How old is your son?

I am working with a few other mothers to develop a school in Hollywood,FL. We are starting with 5 year olds and planning to branch to other levels quickly.

Maybe this would be an option for you.

Hi...I am moving to southeast Florida and I am/will be in the same dilemma. My 2 children currently attend a Waldorf school, but like you, Sunrise in south Miami is v far from my husband's office in Miramar, but we are still not sure where we want to live. Although I've been reading Mothering for years, I have just joined MDC. I'm still finding my way around all of this thread business!! I'll be keeping an eye on your responses though, as I was going to post the same question! My son is supposed to be going into first grade, but I'm not even sure how I will proceed, or where....

Where are you moving from ACRJCR? I feel for you having to leave Waldorf. It saddens me to hear that someone else will be in the same situation that we find ourselves in! You'll find the choices are very limited. Montesorri seems to be as non-trad as it gets. I do know there was a Waldorf group in Boca but apparently but they broke up. When I last contacted them they were trying to get something together for younger children, which doesn't work for us because our son is in grade school. Good luck to you with the move and getting settled. If you need any advise as far as areas/neighborhoods go, I'd be glad to be of assistance.

Hi...you may not see this response dtemom, but if you do....

We still haven't moved to FL, but will be getting there in the next few months. I'd love to receive any advise you could share regarding areas/neighborhoods...preferably Fort Lauderdale area, maybe near the beaches, but safe, and would LOVE to live somewhere where we could walk to things, like cafes, playgrounds, etc. Also, re the alternative school, I am probably going to homeschool for the coming year....a very very new exploration for me! I've focussed in on Oak Meadow's curriculum and program. Thanks for now.

If anyone reading this is involved with a homeschooling group that is alternative/progressive/and nondenominational, please let me know!
