Nest Egg for moving...

Thread Starter
Spouse and I are moving about 500 miles from where we are currently. We are using Upack's relo cube and driving the car down.

We do not have an apartment yet, nor jobs. We are moving now because spouse just finished school and I've been downsized. We are looking for work but nothing yet.

We figure about 1K to move frugally and then we'll have about 6-7K leftover as a nest egg. For two adults who know how to live frugal... does one think this will last at 3 months? We estimate monthly expenses, fixed, to be about $1200.

I'd really reconsider finding at least one job before you move. That way you can find an apartment close to work...or not move twice if you realize that you've picked the wrong town. Even if it is a entry-level job outside your field (waitressing, service industry, etc.) I'd still get something set up before the move. The other person can temp until a job is found.

It will be difficult to find an apartment without a job and proof of income.

When we moved a year and a half ago, we spend nearly $1500 on deposits for the apartment, setting up power, e-mail, phones, new groceries, etc. I think $6000 could go pretty fast even frugally if the job market is tight. Do you have a back up plan in case you don't have jobs by the time it is gone?

For just 2 adults with fixed expences of 1200, I personally would be able to stretch 6k that far, I assume you can! Definitely look for work before though, check out the state's job service website and at least try to have interview appointments aftr you get there Good luck!
