Homemade yogurt and dairy intolerance issues

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what people's experiences are with homemade yogurt if they have trouble tolerating dairy products.

I just got a copy of NT and I'm looking forward to making some homemade yogurt and whey and all. I have been off dairy products for some time. Today, after reading the book, I decided to nix the soy milk and had a small amount of my daughter's organic non-homogenized milk (haven't located raw here yet) and some butter. About 30-45 minutes later, I got a headache and joint pain so bad in both hands that I felt arthritic and had trouble doing up her buttons. Ouch.

I know how beneficial the yogurt is. I am just wondering if anyone out there with dairy issues can tolerate the homemade stuff OK. I haven't made any yet and wonder if it'll be worth it for me. And does it make a difference if it's cow's milk or goat's milk?

Thanks
J

I have a mild dairy intolerance in that I have troubles with milk (some cheese and regular yogurt I tolerate not great but o.k.). But the 24-hour yogurt I am tolerating great!

A lot of people with milk tolerance issues are able to tolerate 24 hour yogurt. I have a pasteurized milk allergy (I get autoimmune reactions like sneezing and runny nose) and am able to consume well fermented kefir. Actually, after starting milk kefir, I've been able to tolerate small amounts of pasteurized milk products with no reaction.

If you're lactose intolerant, then you're likely to have no problems with 24 hour yogurt or kefir that's had the grains taken out and let to ripe on the counter (iirc, i'm not a kefir maker (yet)) since the bactearia eat up the lactose.

If you've got a dairy allergy, you can try raw milk since sometimes the allergy is because of the homogenized fats but not much one can do about a true allergy. Only reason I know is because DH has it and it's kind of scary since his tongue starts to swell! His is a mild case and he's made it through a bowl of ice cream without any serious problems and since we've switched to non-homogenized mlik, he's been able to have it without problems. I need to start making my own ice cream is what needs to happen here, cause nothing will keep that man from the occasional hot fudge sundae.

Thanks everyone. After I posted this, I just recalled that I have a friend with a whole raft of food sensitivities (including dairy) but she can tolerate yogurt just fine.

So, that leaves me pretty optimistic.

I'm going to give the 24 yogurt a try. Wish me luck. And I'll be back for advice no doubt...
