Fish oil is harmful?

I need more omega-3 than I can get from the Blue Ice I take everyday, so I've been supplementing with fish oil. But I wanted to know the TF opinion of fish oil. It was mentioned somewhere on these boards that TF philosophy considers fish oil harmful.

Why is it harmful? I know it's not a suitable replacement for CLO, but what about as an addition to CLO for extra EPA/DHA?

Also, what brand of fish oil is best?

The NT view tends to see high doses of polyunsaturated fatty acids as harmful, but in the case of depression for instance, people get relief from high doses of EPA in clinical trials. I took high doses of Nordic Naturals (low vitamin A and D) for a while in fighting depression. I don't take it now but have quite a bit of seafood in my diet for maintenance.

My impression of the NT point of view is that fish oil is fine as long as it's from a quality source. Cod liver oil is preferred as it also provides vitamins A and D, which most people are deficient in. However, for those who get adequate vitamin D, they may want to go with fish oil, although the NT upper limits of how much vitamins A and D are considered toxic is very different than mainstream since most mainstream studies are based on synthetic A and D.

I don't have a very complete understanding of the chemical structure of fats, so could you explain further about "polyunsaturated fatty acids"? Is fish oil mostly this type of fatty acid but cod liver oil isn't?

Is there any other reason that NT views fish oil as harmful?

If I try to eat seafood for omega-3 instead of taking fish oil, how many times a week should I eat it, and what types of fish or seafood are best?

Thanks!

That's what SF said at a lecture I attended. I don't think clo has any less of the polyunsaturates, but that other fish oils lack A and D. That was the impression I had anyway.

When I was buying fish oil for DH, I always looked for fish oils marked pharmaceutical grade and explicitly stated that they were tested regularly for mercury and impurities. Carlsons is generally highly recommended. We have since switched to cod liver oil and I am now using Blue Ice since it's one of the 3 brands recommended by the WAPF.

My impression is that CLO from the NT perspective is a vehicle to get vitamins A and D. There is little if no discussion about taking high doses of Omega 3 for various therapeutic purposes. At some of the dosage levels of Omega 3 that people take, the high vitamin CLO (and even the low vitamin in some very high doses) would be too much A and D even with the NT view of vitamin D.
